Burnside Group of Companies is currently seeking a motivated and ambitious Engineering Assistant with 1–2 years of experience to join our Water & Wastewater Infrastructure team. As part of our team, you’ll help assess, plan, study, design, obtain approvals, and administer construction of municipal, Indigenous, and private sector water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

This position is based out of our Orangeville (preferred) or Guelph office. Occasional travel to other offices and client sites is required.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist in assessing, planning, and design of water supply, treatment, pumping, storage, distribution, and wastewater collection, pumping, treatment, and disposal projects.
  • Support senior engineers and project managers in producing preliminary and detailed design drawings, preparing related reports, coordinating approvals, developing construction cost estimates, and liaising with clients, sub‑consultants, and contractors.
  • Provide support to construction inspectors and contract administrators on site and in the office to gain familiarity with construction techniques and challenges.
  • Work under the guidance of project managers and management staff across the company to develop design skills and ensure design quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate with multi‑office project teams to ensure successful project delivery that meets client needs.
  • Provide engineering support to multidisciplinary project teams as needed.
  • Prepare proposals, project reports, design documents, permit applications, environmental assessments, and environmental screening reports.
  • Participate in capital planning studies, feasibility studies, and conduct condition assessments of water and wastewater facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
  • Engineering degree in a related discipline (new graduates encouraged to apply).
  • Knowledge of municipal and provincial approval processes, agency and industry standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Problem‑solving, project coordination skills, and the ability to exercise independent judgment in technical matters.
  • Ability to read and interpret internal/external policies, construction drawings, specifications, and related legislation.
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, and able to work independently with shifting priorities and rapid change.
  • Understanding of engineering principles involved in design of municipal infrastructure such as water supply, treatment, distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; and roads.
  • Strong written and oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint, and Project.
  • Experience with water and wastewater infrastructure design, contract administration, and client relationships is an asset but not required.

Salary Range: $70,000 – $82,000 – final compensation will be based on relevant experience, skills, internal equity, and market conditions.
