Job Description:Position Purpose Summary
The Caretaker is responsible for performing minor maintenance/repairs, seasonal duties as well as custodial work for New Hope Community Church and Thrift Store.
Responsibilities- Undertake general outside labour spring/summer groundskeeping, including weed cutting, weeding flower beds, cutting grass, tree/shrub trimming, planting flowers/shrubs, watering plants and maintaining ground appearance (adding mulch to planting areas) at both locations.
- Undertake general outside labour fall/winter groundskeeping including snow removal of sidewalks, clearing emergency exits, applying salt/sand at both locations and recording usage.
- Set up and take down tables and chairs for weekly programs and special events (funerals, weddings, special church events).
- Perform monthly health and safety checks at both locations.
- Identify and report to supervisor any hazardous conditions.
- Collect, bring to curb and return recycling/compost at both locations; at the Thrift Store ensure kitchen cleanliness—clean and polish sinks, toilets and countertops, mirrors and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors); restock washrooms and hand sanitizers; distribute received material as required; clean washroom at Thrift Store 1–2 times per week.
- Ensure general upkeep of external property, keep sidewalks and entrances clear of litter/garbage.
- Clean windows and doors regularly (inside and out) at both locations.
- Keep water coolers replenished at both locations.
- Ensure all exits are clear of debris and all passageways are accessible for fire safety.
- Maintain First Aid Kit inventories in consultation with Pastors/TS Manager at both locations.
- Refill and update MSDS in all binders—chemical safe storage at both locations.
- Report all maintenance issues or repairs to Pastors and/or TS Manager and arrange for external trades or technician personnel as required.
- Open and close for special events or rentals at the Corps.
- Sweep and mop Thrift Store floors 1–2 times per week before or after operational hours.
- Keep storage areas organized and clean.
- Be available and present for scheduled external technicians or inspectors (food safety, pest control, fire inspector, etc.).
- Make minor repairs (oil changes for snowblowers, lawnmower, sharpening blades, unblocking toilets, wall patch‑painting, etc.), working in consultation with the Pastors/TS Manager regarding larger maintenance issues at both locations.
- Receive delivery of major goods as required.
- Schedule maintenance and servicing for program vehicles.
- Coordinate annual spring cleanup.
- Perform other related duties.
- Work in compliance with and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures, and with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, using personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
This is a permanent part‑time position based on 25 hours per week. The schedule may vary according to responsibilities. Frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching are required. You must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds unassisted. Some travel may be required to pick up supplies (up to 5%). The work environment is typically at the facilities in generally agreeable conditions, some duties (grounds‑keeping) performed outdoors.
