The TPEP (Tobacco Prevention and Education Program) Intern will work with the TPEP team in the Center for Population Health at the Clackamas County Public Health Division. In this role, they will collect data on vape disposal and help analyze the findings. This crucial work will allow the team to understand the extent of the issue in the county and help them develop next steps for the project.
They will also help evaluate the team’s Healthy Retail Pilot Project, which offered a grant to a local retailer to help them end their tobacco sales and shift their business model to one that better supports community health. This is an unpaid opportunity.
- Perform data collection at retailers, schools and other locations across the county, including coordinating appointments and conducting surveys/interviews with administrators, business owners, and other community members
- Analyze collected data and work with TPEP staff to develop next steps for the e-cigarette disposal and healthy retail projects
- Attend team, workgroup, and coalition meetings as well as professional development opportunities
- Other related duties as assigned that will support the intern’s development
- Gain familiarity with the role that local data plays in public health work, including collection, analysis and communication to community members
- Through job shadowing, informational interview opportunities and team meetings, develop an understanding of how programs at the local public health authority level address community health needs
- Build awareness of how policy, systems and environmental change work is planned and implemented at the programmatic level
- Studying public health or a related field at an accredited university or college
- Ability to communicate with a diverse group of community members through a variety of means (in-person, email, phone, etc.)
- Organized and self-motivated
- Experience with the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office suite of applications preferred but not required
- Data collection and/or data analysis skills preferred but not required
- Ability to pass a driving record and background check.
- Valid driver’s license. Use of a personal vehicle will be required for this role. Reimbursement for use while conducting business is available in accordance with county policy.
- Approximately 120 hours. These hours are being offered as credit only.
- The ideal start date is mid-to-late January.
- This role will include both remote and in-person work.
- In-person work will occur at Clackamas County Public Health Division’s (CCPHD) offices at 2051 Kaen Road in Oregon City as well as in communities across the county as data collection and other activities are performed.
