Contributing Faculty - Doctor of Social Work

Overview

Walden University seeks a dynamic, innovative faculty member for a contributing (part-time) position in the Ph.D. in Social Work and the DSW programs. This role includes teaching courses and mentoring student research. Walden University supports a diverse community of adult learners and offers more than 100 online degree and certificate programs; it is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Faculty educate students by using online technology and resources so that knowledge, information, feedback, and critique are imparted through thoughtful, well written, timely communications. The environment is respectful of the student, the faculty member, the university, and the discipline.

Faculty are assigned courses taught using the Learning Management System (LMS) and interact with students within the LMS. Discussion Boards are available 24/7. Faculty are expected to be in the classroom a minimum of four days per week and responses to student questions must be posted within 48 hours. Regular and predictable availability is encouraged (e.g., online office hours or regular online chats);

office hours may be required by program or college policy.

Faculty mentors may work one-on-one with students to meet the research requirements of their degree. They are responsible for timely feedback, approval, assessment, and evaluation of each student’s work within the classroom.

Graduate-level faculty may be invited to attend Residencies held domestically or internationally, where they will teach face-to-face intensives and colloquia, and facilitate school and university-wide discussions. Contributing (part-time) faculty may be invited to participate but are not required to attend.

Faculty members must be appropriately credentialed, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution (or an institution recognized by a country s ministry of education) in the discipline being taught, and may be licensed or license-eligible to teach in specific programs. Faculty members must maintain licenses and any appropriate certifications to continue teaching. They are also expected to stay current with research by reviewing articles, journals, and presentations.

If participating in research, the faculty member may publish and acknowledge the university.

Contributing faculty may have the opportunity to travel to university events and residencies. When traveling, the faculty member is expected to fully participate in the event. Core faculty may have required travel throughout the year.

The successful candidate will have:

• An earned Ph.D. or DSW from an accredited university in social work.
• MSW from a CSWE-accredited program.
• Experience sitting on or chairing dissertation committees.
• A significant record of academic and/or professional contributions to the field.
• A minimum of 3 years of teaching at the degree level of the program and one year of online teaching experience (preferred).
• A minimum of 3 years post-MSW social work practice experience.
• A commitment to student success in a diverse population of adult learners.
• A commitment to the social change mission of the university.
• Experience with Learning Management Systems and leveraging technology in learning (required).
• Proficiency with SPSS for quantitative faculty and/or NVivo for qualitative faculty (preferred).
• Willingness to perform other duties as needed by management.

Faculty members are expected to have a personal computer with virus protection and Internet access. The university provides a university email account, access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, listservs, and other faculty communication tools.

In support of pay transparency laws, the expected compensation rate for this position is as follows:

• Graduate Course Instruction: 1,560 – 4,080 per quarter or semester, depending on course type and length
• Undergraduate Course Instruction: 700 – 2,200 per quarter, depending on course type and length

Actual pay may be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as course type, experience and training, geographic location, licensure and certifications, market factors, department budgets, and responsibility.
