As a construction inspector you will be serving as the resident inspector on varied concurrent public works projects, assisting a Construction Inspector 2 or higher-level Engineer on multi-inspector or complex, large projects, or as a member of a survey crew.

This work is characterized by independent initiative and judgment in the resolution of complex construction problems such as those encountered in high density, multi-use/commercial areas, and/or situations requiring the integration of a large number of public works, utilities, or disruption of services considerations. The work is performed under the general supervision of an Engineer or other supervisor.

This position may act in a lead worker capacity.

This position is regularly scheduled for 40 hours per week. Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Examples

of Duties and Responsibilities Resident Inspector on Various Public Works Projects
  • Inspect public works construction activities to ensure compliance with plans and specifications including correct use of materials, equipment and techniques to correct line and grade.
  • Monitor work of contractors to comply with established schedules. Includes reconstruction, new plats, sidewalks, resurfacing, utilities and redevelopment.
  • Storm and sanitary sewer installation (main line, laterals, structures, grades, ditching, mandrel and air testing).
  • Inspect grading and restoration projects, roadway subgrade preparation including proof rolling, crushed aggregate base course installation, asphalt pavement construction including yield determination, concrete pavement construction, curb & gutter construction, sidewalk construction, and inspection and testing of construction materials.
  • Monitor and verify traffic control is set up per approved plan (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and working properly.
  • Monitor compliance with Department of Natural Resources erosion control requirements.
Maintain Records
  • Maintain daily records of construction activities.
  • Compile and disseminate as-built drawings of storm and sanitary sewer construction.
  • Maintain item record account.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in public works engineering activities, including inspection, drafting, surveying, and/or design.

-OR-

Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:

  • Standard engineering and public works construction nomenclature and mathematics including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Practices, policies and procedures related to the inspection of a wide variety of public works projects.
  • Survey instruments and equipment and surveying principles, practices, procedures, nomenclature and symbols, including global positioning system (GPS).
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.
  • Underground sewer utility installations; AND
  • Familiarity with the following:

Principles and practices of engineering drawing and drafting.

-OR-

  • Associate's (or higher level) degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering Design, Civil Engineering, or a related field.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to traverse uneven terrain through wooded, hilly, underdeveloped areas, and construction sites.
  • Ability to lift and manage sewer access structure castings.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to drive wood stakes in hard ground using an eight (8) lbs. maul.
