We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee accounting operations for a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This role is ideal for a hands‑on financial professional who thrives in small to mid‑sized environments, enjoys balancing efficiency with compliance, and has strong nonprofit and grant accounting expertise.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, ensuring accurate transactions, grant compliance, and data integrity.
  • Manage annual audits and tax filings (e.g., Form 990) with external auditors.
  • Lead month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end closings, including reconciliations, journal entries, and preparation of closing packages.
  • Maintain, enforce, and periodically test financial controls; update processes to balance compliance and efficiency.
  • Record complex accounting entries, including pledges receivable, PTO, lease and interest adjustments, deferred revenue, and project cost allocations.
  • Perform account reconciliations (bank, credit card, payroll, loans) and maintain accounting memos for revenue, assets, leases, and software.
  • Stay current with GAAP, non‑profit accounting best practices, and federal grant requirements; advise management on necessary updates.
  • Support preparation of financial statements, cash flow reports, and budget vs. actual analyses for leadership and Board reporting.
  • Evaluate software systems and recommend upgrades or improvements.
  • Foster strong collaboration across teams and handle additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3‑5+ years of related experience in nonprofit and grant accounting.
  • CPA or CMA required.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and government contracting rules.
  • Net Suite experience strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with PEO payroll systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills; ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • 5 weeks paid time off + 10+ holidays.
  • Internet & cell phone reimbursement.
  • Staff retreats, professional development, and sabbatical eligibility.
