Position: Wildlife Field Technician – Avian/Bat Fatality Monitoring (Heppner, OR)
Location: Heppner

The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding two W Wildlife Field Technicians to support avian and bat fatality monitoring at an operational wind facility near Heppner, Oregon. This role offers hands‑on field experience in wildlife monitoring and data collection within a dynamic environmental consulting environment.

This is an 8-month field assignment running from March 2025 through October 2025
, with potential for additional monitoring opportunities. Technicians will work an average of 35–40 hours per week and must commit to 4–5 full field days per week
, including travel to and from the site.

Technicians are responsible for securing their own housing during the assignment. A vehicle will be provided for work‑related travel and duties.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Conduct post‑construction avian and bat fatality monitoring in accordance with standardized protocols.
  • Perform fatality searches and carcass persistence trials.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed field data records.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with field teams, Tetra Tech supervisors, and site management.
  • Comply with all site‑specific and Tetra Tech safety procedures.
  • Work independently or as part of small field crews.
  • Travel to field sites and conduct monitoring activities multiple days per week.
  • Provide personal field gear appropriate for all weather conditions, including binoculars.
  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
  • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field preferred (not required).
  • Students currently pursuing degrees and enthusiastic entry‑level applicants are encouraged to apply.
  • Prior field experience with birds and/or bats preferred.
  • Strong bird and bat identification skills, including raptors and region‑specific species.
  • Ability to identify eagles and other raptors.
  • Experience executing transect‑based research preferred.
  • Proficiency using GPS units, topographic maps, and field data collection tools.
  • Experience operating 4x4 vehicles preferred.

    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day across uneven terrain.
    • Ability to bend, kneel, stand, and lift or carry up to 35 lbs
      .
    • Comfortable working in outdoor environments and in all weather conditions.
    • Ability to handle exposure to bird and bat carcasses.
    Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
    • Extensive outdoor fieldwork in varied weather conditions.
    • Remote field settings with prolonged walking and physical activity. Additional Information:
      • Travel time to the field site will be compensated for up to 2 hours roundtrip
