Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of communications and control equipment and related systems and subsystems, and connections. Interprets, updates and works from plans and detailed schematics.
Day to Day Responsibilities- Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs voice radio UHF and VHF systems and related equipment including antennas, base stations, radios and associated equipment.
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs microwave radio systems and related equipment including antennas, radios, and associated equipment.
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs telephone and data communication systems and equipment; works with communication circuit providers to install, test, troubleshoot and resolve communications issues.
- Installs and tests connectivity and operability of network and wireless equipment.
- Troubleshoots and repairs field telemetry systems under the direction of a Communications and Control Technician 2, Supervisor, or Engineer.
- Configures, installs, troubleshoots, and maintains computer hardware/software and auxiliary equipment supporting a variety of radio, voice, and data communications equipment.
- Fabricates specialized interface circuits for telecom/data hardware and creates and maintains detailed documentation of all wiring system changes/circuit modifications under supervision.
- Responds to failures and emergencies involving interruptions in communications and other electronic equipment; performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.
- Ensures installations are safe and operate properly; reviews the work of contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Performs diagnostic and analytical tests; researches information as necessary and maintains knowledge of current practices and technologies.
- Maintains records, files, supplies, and equipment necessary to perform daily work.
- Trains, assists, and provides feedback to less‑experienced workers at the direction of a supervisor.
- Performs other tasks as required, including those at lower levels, with training as needed.
- Appropriately wears required protective equipment and safety gear.
- Operates company vehicles in compliance with state/local laws and company policies.
- Acquires and maintains OQ qualifications.
- Acts and communicates in a professional, respectful, and cooperative manner in connection with all activities associated with NW Natural.
- Follows supervisory instructions and is flexible and adaptable to changing conditions and expectations.
- Maintains punctual, regular, and reliable attendance.
- Demonstrates the company’s core values and complies with all company policies and procedures.
- Three years combined prior experience troubleshooting and repairing voice and data communications, radio systems, networking and electronic equipment specific to the communications and controls craft.
- Knowledge of component level electronic theory, practices and principles demonstrated by community college or nationally accredited electronics school coursework, military designation of an applicable Electronics Technician rating, FCCF General Radio Telephone License, or ISCET, NABOR, or APCO Certification.
- At minimum hold the Oregon Limited Energy Technician – Class B (LEB) License or equivalent, or able to obtain within 6 months of employment.
