Job Summary

The Mathematics Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, is seeking to fill a full-time, academic year, tenure track positions in mathematics education, with appointment beginning August 17, 2026.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; higher ranks will be considered. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience of the individual selected.

  • If appointed at the Assistant Professor rank, the anticipated hiring range is $97,788 - $107,628.
  • If appointed at the Associate Professor rank, the anticipated hiring range is $112,500 - $118,524.

Excellence in teaching, an active program in research and scholarship, and departmental service are expected. Primary duties and responsibilities are to teach undergraduate mathematics courses for future elementary and secondary teachers as well as other mathematics courses, and to maintain an active scholarship program that provides research and practical experiences for undergraduate students. The department specifically seeks candidates in mathematics education that complement department needs.

Cal Poly embraces a teacher-scholar model in which faculty are expected to be excellent teachers, produce scholarship in their field of interest, and provide service to the institution. The selected candidate will consider using creative teaching approaches that enhance student learning and participate in scholarly practices such as peer-reviewed research, conference presentations, and grant development that leads to publication. The selected candidate will pursue a systematic program of research and scholarship, curricular improvement, and participate in service activities including committee service, student advising, and building industry relationships.

Required Qualifications
  • EITHER (1) a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or closely related field AND Master’s degree in Mathematics (or equivalent coursework), OR (2) a Ph.D. in Mathematics and significant experience in research and teaching in mathematics education
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and experience teaching mathematics at the university level.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) high quality teaching and research with students.
  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) scholarly productivity.
  • Must provide evidence of (or potential for) promoting the well-being and advancement of students, colleagues, and the department.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population fostering a respectful, collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise in an area compatible with or broadening the research activities of the department. Special areas of interest include elementary mathematics education, secondary mathematics education, undergraduate mathematics education, K-12 teacher preparation and professional development, mathematics curriculum development, and active student-centered learning in mathematics classrooms.
  • Interest in teaching mathematics content courses for future elementary school teachers.
  • Experience and commitment to excellence in teaching mathematics at the university level. Applicants should be comfortable teaching a variety of mathematics courses.
  • Experience supervising undergraduate student research.
  • Interest in pursuing opportunities for funding, or participating in grant activities with colleagues.
