Established by the U.S. Department of Labor, the OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) at UC San Diego was one of four original OTIECs. We offer high quality, standards-based OSHA training in Alaska, Arizona, American Samoa, California, Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Since 1992, thousands of safety and health professionals have attended our courses and have earned our Professional Safety and Health Officer Certificate or our Safety and Health Specialist Certificate.

Compensation for teaching one section of this course ranges from $650 to $2,500. The exact amount is determined by course modality, units of instruction, and enrollment numbers. Instructional agreements are made on a section-by-section basis at the University’s discretion with no guarantee of future sections.
As a condition of employment, finalists may be asked about final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years related to misconduct and related investigations, including matters involving harassment, discrimination, dishonesty, or unethical conduct as defined by the employer. Responsibilities- Provide excellent instruction demonstrating well-honed adult training techniques
- Attend OTIEC courses in order to be authorized by OSHA to teach them
- Carefully and continually enhance course curriculum in consultation with the Curriculum Manager and Lead Instructor
- Arrive at the training site at least 30 minutes before class to prepare the room, or open Zoom link at least 30 minutes before class begins
- Follow all UC San Diego and OTIEC procedures, including completion of all instructor and student pre- and post-course paperwork
- Strictly adhere to the published schedule, unless a change has been approved beforehand by OTIEC staff
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master’s Degree is highly preferred
- 10 years or more of experience in the Occupational Safety and Health Industry
- Be proficient and utilize the most current instructional technology while providing training
- The OSHA Training Institute Education Center requires up to three (3) separate demo teaching assignments prior to final approval. Scheduling options and participation will be arranged by UC San Diego OTIEC.
- Instructors must avoid participating in or promoting training programs or consulting services that compete with UC San Diego OTIEC during or after class and adhere to high professional ethics
- As an academic department within UC San Diego, all Division of Extended Studies Program instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the Academic Senate regulations. Teaching assignments are by agreement and subject to department policies. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include preparation time.
