Job Summary
The Charge Nurse, under the direct and indirect supervision of the Nursing Unit Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, and/or Hospital Supervisor, facilitates and assists with all levels of nursing care for a group of patients within one nursing unit during a working shift. The Charge Nurse frequently assumes full or partial staff nurse responsibilities and serves as a liaison between staff nurses and the Nursing Coordinator, assisting with day‑to‑day problem solving and shift communication.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Assist in supervising nursing personnel: help interview applicants for posted positions, recommend candidates to the Coordinator, support organizational goals and objectives, provide input into staff evaluations, monitor staff performance and document performance issues, maintain staffing patterns for the unit, and coordinate staff meetings under the direction of the Coordinator.
- Contribute to overall unit functioning by monitoring resources, identifying systems problems that interfere with client care, communicating risk situations to the Coordinator, participating in trend analysis for the operational budget, assisting with material management, and providing direction during emergencies as delegated.
- Actively participate in client care: develop and implement standards of client care, policies, and procedures; coordinate and deliver patient care on the unit; apply the nursing process (assessment, implementation, evaluation); support quality assurance activities; participate in multidisciplinary patient care conferences and discharge planning; problem‑solve intra‑ and inter‑shift issues; inform Coordinators/Hospital Supervisors of problems and resolutions; function within expected behavior standards of Staff Nurse.
- Educate other healthcare professionals and clients: develop and present in‑service programs, participate in clinical orientation, plan and provide education to patients and families, and serve as a resource to other departments within the specialty area.
- Participate in professional development: support departmental philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures; attend meetings, special projects, and committees; support research programs; promote interdepartmental communication; foster public relations; and pursue continuing education and development.
Three (3) years of registered nurse experience, one year in a clinical specialty.
Education- High school diploma or GED.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Registered Nurse License (Oregon).
- Basic Life Support.
- Experience in acute care or skilled nursing, effective problem solving and communication skills, and utilization of the nursing process.
- Two (2) years of recent Med/Surg experience in an acute care setting.
- Experience with insulin drips.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- Med/Surg Certification.
- Demonstrated clinical judgment with inpatient orthopedic/neuro patients.
- Charge RN, 2 North, Medical/Surgical (36hr, day)
