Position: Charge RN - Med-Surg (Ortho/Neurosurgery/General Surgery) - KSMC 2N / 24 Hr / Nights

Job Summary

The Charge Nurse, under the direct supervision of the Nursing Unit Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and/or Hospital Supervisor, facilitates and assists with all levels of nursing care being provided to a group of patients within one nursing unit during one working shift. The Charge Nurse frequently assumes all or partial staff nurse responsibilities and is directly accountable to the Nursing Coordinator for the unit.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in supervising nursing personnel, including interviewing applicants for posted positions and making recommendations to the Coordinator; support organizational goals and objectives; provide input into staff evaluations; monitor performance of staff and document performance problems; coordinate staff meetings under the direction of the Coordinator.
  • Contribute to overall functioning of the unit by monitoring resources, identifying and communicating system problems to the Coordinator, participating in trend analysis for the operational budget, assisting with materials management and providing direction during emergency situations as delegated.
  • Actively participate in client care by developing and implementing standards of client care, coordinating patient care delivery, utilizing the nursing process, evaluating effectiveness of care, participating in quality assurance activities and multidisciplinary patient care conferences, and providing problem‑solving intrashift and intershift support.
  • Function as an educator for other health care professionals and clients by developing and presenting in‑service programs, participating in clinical orientation, providing education to patients and families, and serving as a resource to other departments.
  • Participate in professional activities, support departmental philosophy and goals, participate in meetings and committees, support research programs, promote interdepartmental communications, foster public relations, and assume responsibility for continuing education and development.
Basic Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience, one year in clinical specialty.
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • High school diploma or GED.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Registered Nurse License (in the state where care is provided).
  • Basic Life Support.
Additional Requirements
  • Experience in acute care or skilled nursing, utilizing the nursing process, effective problem solving and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
  • Two (2) years of recent Med/Surg experience in an acute care setting.
  • Experience with insulin drips.
  • Med/Surg Certification.
  • Demonstrated clinical judgment with inpatient orthopedic/neuro patients.
