Job Summary: The Charge Nurse, under the direct and indirect supervision of the Nursing Unit Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator and/or Hospital Supervisor, facilitates and assists with all levels of nursing care being provided to a group of patients within one nursing unit during the period of one working shift. In addition to these responsibilities, the Charge Nurse frequently assumes all or partial staff nurse responsibilities.
The Charge Nurse is directly accountable to the Nursing Coordinator for the unit. The Charge Nurse assists the staff nurses with day to day problem solving, communication between shifts, and may serve as a link between staff nurse and the Nursing Coordinator.
- Assist in supervising nursing personnel: interview applicants for posted positions, make recommendations to Coordinator, support organizational goals, provide input in staff evaluations, monitor staff performance, develop staffing patterns, coordinate staff meetings.
- Contribute to overall unit functioning by monitoring resources, identifying system problems that interfere with effective client care, participating in trend analysis, assisting with material management, and providing direction during emergency situations.
- Actively participate in providing client care: develop and implement standards of client care, coordinate delivery of patient care, apply nursing process (assessment, implementation, evaluation), monitor quality assurance activities, participate in multi-disciplinary conferences and discharge planning, assist in problem solving, and maintain expected behavior standards.
- Serve as educator for other healthcare professionals and clients: develop and present in‑service programs, conduct clinical orientation, plan and provide education to patients and families, serve as resource to other departments.
- Participate in professional activities: support departmental goals, attend meetings, special projects, committees, support research programs, promote communication, foster public relations, and pursue continuing education.
- Maintain nursing responsibilities: apply personnel policies and procedures, adhere to time and attendance policies, maintain confidentiality, demonstrate positive attitude, and provide assistance to members.
- Three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience, one year in clinical specialty.
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Registered Nurse License (Oregon).
- Basic Life Support certification.
- Experience in acute care or skilled nursing, utilizing the nursing process, effective problem solving and communication skills.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- Two (2) years of recent Med/Surg experience in an acute care setting.
- Experience with insulin drips.
- Med/Surg Certification.
- Demonstrated clinical judgment with a variety of chronic illness and diseases.
