Campus Safety Officer – Public Safety Professional

Pre‑Employment Background Assessment

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol (50%) – vehicular, bicycle, foot patrol; secure buildings; conduct fire drills; assist with parking enforcement; perform crowd control, traffic control, and security screening during special events; provide general assistance and emergency medical aid; document incidents and report suspicious activity; perform courtesy unlocks and jump‑start assistance.
  • Office Duties (20%) – maintain shift log and incident reports; provide testimony to law enforcement; protect confidentiality; manage lost and found; complete assigned projects such as SOP development, training, equipment research, and scheduling.
  • Enforce Rules (15%) – enforce campus policies (e.g., Skateboard, Speech, Alcoholic Beverage, Parking, Bicycle, Residence Hall) and refer violators to appropriate processes.
  • Assist Facilities Services (5%) – support snow removal, de‑icing, office moves, issuance of identification cards and keys, electronic access control; assist in crime prevention and emergency management training.
  • Other Duties (5%) – perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
  • At least twenty‑one years old
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license and required certifications (First Aid, AED, CPR, LEDS)
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of full‑time experience in security, military, or a similar role with contemporary knowledge of security and property protection
  • Computer literacy – experience with email, Internet, word processing, spreadsheets, MS Office suite
  • Knowledge and application of OSU – DPS administrative policies within 6‑month probationary period
  • Demonstrated ability to promote diversity and inclusive engagement in a campus safety or public service environment
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background assessment as outlined above
Preferred Qualifications
  • OC Spray and Handcuffing certification
  • One year of prior experience in campus public safety, security, law enforcement, or military police with patrol and incident response responsibilities
Working Conditions & Schedule
  • Shift work: midnight, third shift, day, swing, and night; 4/10 or 5/8 hour days with possible overnight and on‑call duties; weekends and holidays may be required
  • Work environment includes outdoor duties, varied weather, loud noises, bright lights, smoke, noxious odors, heights, confined spaces, and hazardous materials
  • Cell phone required during all working hours
