Utah Valley University's Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering is seeking qualified adjunct faculty to teach on a semester-by-semester basis. Adjunct faculty play a vital role in supporting UVU's mission of student success by bringing professional expertise and real-world experience into the classroom. Teaching opportunities may be available in civil, mechanical, and pre-engineering courses, depending on departmental needs.
This role is ideal for professionals who want to share their knowledge, mentor future engineers, and contribute to a supportive, student-centred learning environment. Adjunct faculty appointments are part-time and contingent on enrollment and scheduling needs. Applicants must be able to live and work in the State of Utah, and employment offers are conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
Summary of Responsibilities- Design and teach courses in civil, mechanical, or pre-engineering fields.
- Plan, prepare, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives.
- Develop instructional materials such as syllabi, assignments, and exams.
- Use effective teaching methods to engage students in classrooms and labs.
- Evaluate student learning through appropriate assessment methods.
- Collaborate with assigned full‑time faculty to ensure academic and departmental standards are met.
- Maintain a student-centred approach to instruction.
- Coordinate experiential or service-learning opportunities as assigned.
- Support departmental initiatives and assist with program effectiveness.
- Attend meetings and serve on curriculum committees as assigned.
- Stay current in the discipline through professional development, industry research, and continuing education.
A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field AND one to three years of professional experience in engineering practice, design, research, or related areas relevant to the courses being taught.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Knowledge- Strong knowledge of mechanical and/or civil engineering principles, theories, and practices.
- Understanding of curriculum design, instructional methods, and assessment techniques.
- Familiarity with current industry standards, trends, and emerging technologies in engineering.
- Awareness of safety standards and best practices in labs, workshops, and fieldwork.
- Knowledge of accreditation standards and higher education teaching expectations.
- Effective teaching and presentation skills to explain complex engineering concepts clearly.
- Strong organizational and time management skills for preparing lessons, grading, and managing classes.
- Proficiency with engineering software, tools, and lab equipment relevant to mechanical and civil fields.
- Strong interpersonal skills for building positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
- Skill in evaluating student performance and providing constructive feedback.
- Ability to create and maintain an engaging, inclusive, and student-focused learning environment.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs and learning styles.
- Ability to collaborate with full-time faculty to align with departmental standards and outcomes.
- Ability to integrate real-world professional experience into teaching.
- Ability to stay current in the field through professional development and apply new knowledge to instruction.
