Overview

The Recycling Coordinator at Utah Valley University plays a vital role in advancing the university’s sustainability and facilities operations. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Facilities Services, this position provides hands-on leadership by supervising part-time and temporary staff and ensuring recycling procedures are followed safely and effectively. The role works closely with multiple campus departments to plan and coordinate recycling pick-ups, develop efficient daily routes, and support smooth, reliable service across the university.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a balance of coordination, leadership, and operational work. The Recycling Coordinator communicates directly with recycling vendors to ensure contract compliance and timely service, while also operating essential vehicles and equipment, such as forklifts, compactors, balers, and pickup trucks. Applicants will find a collaborative work environment where their efforts contribute to UVU’s commitment to environmental responsibility, operational excellence, and a well-maintained campus.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises and trains part-time and temporary recycling personnel in all recycling operations.
  • Processes recycling material by sorting, baling, compacting, and transporting it.
  • Monitors the safety of the recycling department and ensures proper PPE is being worn and equipment is being used correctly.
  • Maintains knowledge of recycling trends, rules, and regulations.
  • Helps maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Assumes duties of part-time and temporary recycling personnel in their absence.
Qualifications

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent plus one year of full-time work experience in recycling or a related field, including some supervision.

Preferred Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience supervising a recycling department.
  • Current forklift license.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Current/valid driver's licence.
  • Forklift certification is required within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of tools and methods used in recycling.
  • Knowledge of materials and what can and cannot be recycled.
  • Knowledge of specialized equipment used for recycling.
  • Knowledge of safe loading, unloading, and transporting of heavy loads using trucks and trailers.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance operations.
Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent typing and formatting skills.
Abilities
  • Ability to supervise and provide on-the-job training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must be able to perform heavy lifting with the ability to expend arduous physical effort and to work in conditions that may involve some hazards and at times, considerable discomfort.
