POSITION OVERVIEW
As a News 6 Meteorologist, each day you'll provide accurate, compelling and understandable weather forecasts across multiple platforms, including TV, digital, streaming and social media. This could look like writing articles, recording vertical and horizontal videos and collaborating closely with producers working on linear newscasts.
Bonus points if you have forecasted hurricanes before, have knowledge of nontraditional video and editing systems and/or are licensed to fly drones.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THIS ROLE- Deliver accurate weather forecasts, paying special attention to severe and inclement weather across Central Florida
- Provide calm, informed guidance along with accurate data during extreme weather, such as hurricanes and floods
- Deliver live reporting and creative storytelling in the field on weather, damage/aftermath, environment/climate, and other market-relevant weather stories
- Forecasting includes creative and engaging graphics and pre-production elements that can easily translate on any platform they're shown
- Use process language to explain the "why" behind your forecasts, stories, and the relevance to the audience
- Demonstrates awareness of cutting-edge weather science and forecasting upgrades and how to apply them to News 6 forecasting
- Contribute content, daily, to station platforms online and on social media, establishing a strong feedback/engagement loop with the audience
- Support other team meteorologists in creating graphics, populating channels with content, and supporting the overall station weather strategy
- Maintain a flexible schedule that allows active response to changing weather, particularly during Central Florida's wet season
- Develop and maintain close ties with the community by engaging with local individuals, venues, and participating in community events
THE ROLE
- Hold an AMS seal as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist
- Have at least a Bachelor's degree in Meteorology
- Proven track record of accuracy in weather forecasting, with extensive knowledge of Baron and WSI weather systems
- Have good relationships in federal and/or state professional meteorological communities and understand government resources used to help track the weather.
- Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Knowledge of newsroom computer systems, smartphone technology, and social media platforms.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to represent the station well in the community.
- Experience forecasting hurricanes
- Licensed to fly drones
- Knowledge of Adobe Premiere editing system
- Familiarity with nontraditional video-gathering, including cell phones, DSLR and other camera equipment
- Fluent in Spanish
- Master's degree in Meteorology
