Position: SENIOR PROGRAM LEADER – CARUTH CAMP
SUMMARY

The Senior Program Leader directs and coordinates the activities and functions of the seasonal direct care staff, assists in coordinating events as assigned by the Camp Director, and assists in supervision of group leaders.

The Senior Program Leader works closely with the Camp Director and Director of Camping Services to ensure that each of the programs offered within the area of Camping Services will run in a smooth, functioning manner to be in the best interest of the youth, school/organization, personnel, and the agency.

The Senior Program Leader is expected to work within the philosophy, goals, aims, and operating procedures of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to ensure the best interest of the youth who attend any camping services programs.

The Senior Program Leader is directly responsible to the Camp Director.

This position is exempt from overtime pay.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties and responsibilities are the various types of work performed in this position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Assists in the development of the plan of work and operation of the facility including assisting the maintenance team with upkeep of infrastructure.
  • Demonstrates initiative in the development of curriculum and scheduling of activities for camp programs.
  • Assists the Camp Director in planning the day-to-day operations of summer resident camp.
  • Provides supervision of Summer Resident Camp staff involved in camp programs.
    • Helps to resolve conflict between youth and/or staff before being brought to the attention of the Camp Director.
    • Demonstrates persuasiveness in the selection, orientation, and training of Camping Services staff.
    • Serves as a member of the recruiting team for summer staff.
  • Provides necessary documentation for all aspects of Summer Camp operation including but not limited to incident reporting, census, business reporting, etc.
  • Maintains standards set forth by Youth Ranches policies and procedures, ACA and COA standards and State statutes.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness, thriftiness, and wise stewardship of the agency’s resources at all times including materials, supplies, and assets.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    A minimum of a two-year AA Degree in either the educational or human services field is required. A bachelor’s degree in the educational field or a closely related human services field is preferred. Individuals who possess a high school degree with at least three years’ experience in a camping environment will be considered.

    Ropes Course certification from an ACCT provider must be attained within six months.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each area of responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the camping process, including group work theory and practices.
  • Must possess a general knowledge in such areas as challenge course activities, pool safety, ropes course facilitation, basic canoe instruction, nature programs, and theories of conflict resolution, cultural diversity and peer mediation.
  • Must possess the ability to remain in control during crisis situations, along with demonstrated understanding and the ability to tolerate and deal with various behavior levels exhibited by youth and staff.
  • Must have the ability to recognize problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions (i.e., the ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with problems involving a variety of situations).
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor environment and supervise while participating in group activities.
  • Must be willing to remain flexible in the work schedule, as weekend duty will be required.
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver License and be able to maintain a safe driving record consistent with agency policy as it relates to driving an agency assigned vehicle.
