Staff Roadway Engineer – Burns & Mc Donnell
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Roadway Engineer to join our rapidly growing Transportation Practice in our Florida office. Our ideal candidate will be someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who can work both independently and in a team environment.
In this position you will be part of a skilled team that values everyone’s contributions to a project. Typical projects include municipal roadway design projects, multi-lane expressway and interstate projects, as well as interchange projects of varying complexity. You will work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and technicians in the design and analysis of transportation projects and collaborate with contractors and construction staff on design/build projects.
Responsibilities- Receives instructions from Project Managers or Senior Project Engineers regarding expected results.
- Receives technical guidance on uncommon or complex problems with supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
- Researches design alternatives and provides findings to the Senior Project Engineer.
- Maintains accuracy of engineering design and plan production, ensuring thoroughness, adherence to standards, budgets, and schedules.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops, reviewing publications, establishing professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
- Performs varying components of roadway design, including development of horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, drainage and hydraulic analysis, erosion‑control plans, tabulation of project quantities and cost estimates, and general plan production.
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, preferably civil or with an emphasis in transportation engineering.
- Minimum of 3 years related experience in a variety of engineering projects. A Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering may substitute for 1 year of experience.
- Candidate must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or be on track to take the PE exam.
- Ability to work as part of a multi‑discipline team.
- Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
- Proficient computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to perform under pressure with tight deadlines while working on multiple concurrent projects.
- Knowledge of transportation design standards, including AASHTO design guidelines.
- Experience with transportation engineering software such as Bentley Micro Station, InRoads, Geopak, and Open Roads.
- Experience working with municipal agencies and State Departments of Transportation.
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
