The Opportunity:

WSP is initiating a search for a Junior Transmission Line Design Engineer to join our Power & Energy team at our client’s office located in Rochester, NY. Additional potential locations include Atlanta, GA, Boston, MA, Charlotte, NC, New York, NY, Orlando, FL, Binghamton, NY and Augusta, ME. The Transmission Line Engineer will work with our Energy Team to meet client objectives and address project challenges.

Responsibilities
  • Conductor selection
  • Structure recommendations
  • Insulation, A/C interference, static wire, grounding studies
  • Line design: plans and profiles, cross‑section details
  • LiDAR and aerial photo data analysis
  • Utilization of wetlands, vernal pool and sensitive resource data in line and structure design and placement
  • Detailed estimate and probability modeling
  • Other studies as required to complete projects
  • Assist in leading overall transmission line design for all capital projects
  • Review/design transmission line plan and profile drawings using PLSCADD to ensure compliance with Client Standards and NESC/other standards
  • Drive the project plan for transmission line routing and strategy, including:
    • Decide whether to rebuild existing lines or obtain additional right of way based on area congestion and permitting issues
    • Determine required structure designs based on design constraints
    • Determine routing around congested stations to optimize design/reliability and minimize crossings
  • Serve as an overhead transmission line design technical specialist and provide consultation to project teams
  • Develop technical specifications, QA/QC procedures, deliverable templates, and other means of increasing efficiency
  • Review design documents for construction (plan & profiles, structure load trees, foundations, bill of materials)
  • Understand geotechnical reports and apply information to foundation design software (e.g., L-PILE, MFAD)
  • Timely and on-budget delivery of design packages
  • Ensure quality of all design packages
  • Coordinate interfaces with other engineering disciplines
  • Support the Project Engineer to achieve project goals
  • Represent the project with the client in coordination with the Project Engineer
  • Support the development of the quality management system
  • Reporting and project management activities as required
  • Support management to achieve organizational goals
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding funds, resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
  • Minimum of 1+ years post-education experience, preferably in Transmission Line Design with voltages up to 115 kV HVAC
  • Knowledge of codes and standards such as NESC, AISC, IEEE and ANSI
  • Experience with finite element modeling within PLS-CADD, POLE, and TOWER; MFAD, HFAD, LPILE, AutoCAD, and Micro Station; PSCAD is a plus
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to coordinate and direct subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently
  • Proven track record of workplace safety and adherence to company health, safety and harassment policies
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet schedules
  • Subject to client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy; policy details provided during onboarding
  • Position is located at the client office and contingent upon client approval
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • Essential professional licensure/certification

WSP provides a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, retirement savings, paid time off, and parental leave. Compensation for this role is estimated at $65,400 – $107,910 depending on location, experience, and qualifications.
