This position performs professional, supervisory, administrative, technical, and operational work specializing in strategic public safety activities within the Office of the Fire Marshal, Fire Rescue Department. This includes assisting the Fire Marshal in planning, managing, coordinating, and directing the fire prevention and life safety management services and activities of the Office of the Fire Marshal. Work is performed with considerable independence under the supervision of the Fire Marshal.
Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.
Duties may vary based on the area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
- Assists in the preparation of the goals and objectives of the Office of the Fire Marshal. Develops annual work program and establishes staffing and scheduling requirements.
- Provides direct supervision of assigned personnel. Evaluates the work of reporting staff.
- Assigns, trains, and supervises the staff of the Office of the Fire Marshal in conducting fire/life safety inspection activities, plans examinations, and educational programs, and the preparation and maintenance reports and records relating to Office of the Fire Marshal activities.
- Identifies hazards, meets with builders, owners, and occupants to correct problems, and appears before civic groups to inform, educate, and improve fire safety.
- Ensures that adopted fire and life safety codes are applied and enforced and code violations are corrected in a timely manner.
- Reviews new construction plans for fire code compliance and performs on-site inspections to ensure compliance; annually inspects commercial structures for fire compliance. Prepares maps, fire plans, and inspections for fire safety.
- Confers with architects, engineers, builders, building officials, professional associations, citizen groups, and the general public to discuss matters of interest and necessity to the fire service.
- Promotes good customer service and public relations, coordinates operations, and promotes partnerships with other divisions, departments, outside agencies, citizen groups, and the general public.
- Provides recommendations for fire code requirements at Development Review Committee meetings.
- Represents the County at Technical Review Committee and Compliance Code Board meetings.
- Reviews project construction plans and specifications for compliance with applicable codes.
- As directed, may investigate fires of suspicious or unknown origin and/or involving a fatality to determine arson probability. Interviews witnesses or suspects, obtains and preserves evidence, performs background research, and provides expert testimony when required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and three (3) years of experience in Fire Prevention supervision and/or Fire Inspection supervision. In lieu of the degree requirements, additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and six (6) years of experience as a Fire Plans Examiner or Fire Inspector. In lieu of the degree requirements, additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
