The Technician, Fabricator at Nextran Truck Centers is a skilled position responsible for constructing and manufacturing metal parts and products for our customers' medium- and heavy-duty trucks. This position reports to the Shop Foreman.

Essential Duties
  • Performs work as outlined on work order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, and shapes metal materials using hand tools, power tools, and machinery.
  • Welds or solder metal components using MIG, TIG, or arc welding techniques.
  • Assembles metal structures and ensures proper alignment and fit.
  • Performs entry-level mechanic work on roll-off and dump trucks.
  • Performs quality checks to ensure finished products meet specifications.
  • Documents all work performed.
  • Maintains tools and equipment and follows safety protocols.
  • Collaborates with team members to meet production goals and deadlines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Technical training or certification in welding or fabrication preferred.
  • Proven experience in metal fabrication or a related field.
  • 1‑3 years of heavy truck mechanic experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Proficiency with fabrication tools and welding equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.
  • Must have own set of tools.
  • Basic computer skills.

    • Stand for 8–10 hours daily, often on hard surfaces like concrete.

    • Lift, carry, and maneuver metal parts weighing 20–100+ lbs.
    • Use repetitive hand and arm motions for welding, grinding, and cutting.
    • Maintain steady hand and arm positions for precision work.
    • Climb to a safe position to access the engine compartment area, firewall, or roof of a vehicle to perform repairs.
  • Sensory & Coordination
    • Use fine motor skills to handle small components and tools.
    • Coordinate multiple limbs while operating machinery.
    • See details up close and at a distance (e.g., reading blueprints, inspecting welds).
    • React quickly to machine controls and safety hazards.
    • Tolerate loud environments and distinguish sounds amid background noise.
  • Environmental Conditions
    • Work in areas with high noise levels, metal dust, and bright welding light.
    • Exposure to heat from welding and cutting operations.
    • May work in temperature‑variable environments.
    • Wear PPE consistently: gloves, goggles, steel‑toed boots, welding masks, etc.
