Position Introduction / Key Duties

Cimarron is seeking a Machinist to support the Boeing CST-100 Starliner program at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Starliner is a next‑generation spacecraft designed to transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS) as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Built for reusability, the Starliner represents a major step forward in commercial spaceflight and human space exploration.

As a Machinist, you’ll play a crucial role in manufacturing precision components for this spacecraft—helping to shape the future of crewed missions beyond Earth.

Key Duties
  • Follow oral and written instructions, engineering drawings, and rough sketches to complete experimental or developmental machining projects, utilizing a full range of machine tools.
  • Assess project requirements, including material selection, operations, tolerance specifications, and construction methods.
  • Plan machining sequences, select appropriate tools, and determine the most efficient approach to complete work accurately and effectively.
  • Set up and operate a variety of tool room and grinding machines, including mounting attachments, grinding components, and setting tools to establish optimal machining procedures.
  • Develop machining plans and lay out work for entire projects, incorporating temporary tooling and production aids while applying expertise in machining finishes, plastic and metal characteristics, and laboratory machine shop techniques.
  • Lay out and machine complex parts, performing advanced calculations using geometry and trigonometry to establish exact dimensions, adjust configurations, and determine suitable material substitutions.
  • Conduct progressive inspections to ensure dimensional accuracy using precision measuring instruments.
  • Verify completed components for compliance with tight tolerances and quality specifications.
  • Assemble tools through fitting, filing, grinding, lapping, and honing. Conduct functional tests, analyze operational issues, and recommend improvements to enhance construction and machining efficiency.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and engineering teams to resolve design challenges, refine machining methods, and determine appropriate heat treatment and material usage.
  • Perform rework and modifications as needed to meet project specifications.
  • Carry out additional related duties as assigned.
Required Skills, Experience, and Education
  • Due to facility security requirements, only U.S. citizens are eligible for consideration at this time.
  • This position requires access to federal facilities. Candidates must possess a valid, unexpired Real ‑compliant driver's license or state‑issued identification card at the time of hire.   • Ability to complete a pre‑employment background check, breath alcohol test, and drug screen, which will include but is not limited to testing for marijuana use.
  • 3 or more years of experience as a machinist.
  • Experience with manual and CNC machining in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, heat treatment, and machining characteristics of various materials, including metals and plastics.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, GD&T, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to use advanced measurement tools such as micrometers, calipers, and CMM.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
Desired Skills, Experience, and Education
  • Experience in aerospace or defense manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with high‑tolerance machining for spaceflight hardware.
  • Knowledge of CNC programming and CAD/CAM software.
