Overview

Advanced Practice Provider, Orlando Regional Medical Center - Critical Care Management.

Location:

Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the physician, provide inpatient management, consultations, and co-management of critically ill patients according to established practice guidelines and evidence-based standards.
  • Possess specialized skill and knowledge unique to the ICU setting (Medical, Surgical, Neurosurgical, Cardiovascular, etc.).
  • Provide direct clinical services for critically ill patients according to established protocols and evidence-based standards; obtain comprehensive and focused histories and exams.
  • Evaluate critically ill complex patients in the ICU and step-down units; synthesize data to assess clinical scenarios and prescribe interventions and medications.
  • Use clinical judgment and evidence-based medicine to order and schedule appropriate laboratory and radiographic studies.
  • Collaborate with supervising physicians to determine and place appropriate specialty consultations.
  • Evaluate and manage critically ill patients in the ICU and step-down units; formulate and implement management plans with supervising and consulting physicians.
  • Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (e.g., central venous catheter placement, arterial catheter placement, chest tube placement, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, paracentesis, endotracheal intubation, therapeutic bronchoscopy).
  • Perform advanced cardiac life support and act on behalf of supervising clinicians during medical emergencies to maintain life support.
  • Remove catheters, drains, sutures and staples as appropriate.
  • Interpret arterial blood gases and manage invasive and noninvasive ventilation; assess need for vasoactive medications and manage orders and titration parameters.
  • Interpret invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring, EKGs, radiographic tests, and institute appropriate interventions.
  • Maintain independence in patient care with minimal physician supervision in a highly specialized area; participate in emergent lifesaving procedures and daily rounds.
  • Notify attending physicians about unusual or unexpected events and institute appropriate emergent interventions when needed.
  • Prescribe medications using evidence-based medicine and plan of care discussed in rounds; document progress notes, consult notes, H&Ps and clinical resumes; document procedures and outcomes.
  • Explain procedures or tests to patients and families; provide family-centered care and education; address family questions or concerns.
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based medicine in clinical practice.
Qualifications Education / Training
  • Nurse Practitioner:
    Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program with a Master’s Degree. Board certification required if graduated after July 2006. Acute care certification required for new hires after May 1, 2021.
  • Physician Assistant:
    Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program. Acute care or critical care fellowship required for new hires after May 1, 2021.
Licensure / Certification
  • Nurse Practitioner: ARNP license in Florida; current ACLS and BLS; FCCS certificate (or obtain within 6 months of hire if preapproved).
  • Physician Assistant:
    Florida licensure; current ACLS and BLS; FCCS certificate (or obtain within 6 months of hire if preapproved).
Experience
  • Nurse Practitioner: 2 years of critical care APP experience if graduated before July 2006 and without certification.
  • Physician Assistant: 2 years of critical care experience in an APP role; a fellowship may substitute for the required experience.
