Irrigation Technician

Job Summary

The Irrigation Technician installs and maintains irrigation systems for crops, parks, gardens, and green spaces. The position requires operating heavy machinery such as trenchers and soil compactors.

• Conduct detailed irrigation inspections, document repairs and upgrades.
• Clean decorative water features.
• Excavate and trench using hand tools; backfill and compact to minimize spoil and settling.
• Maintain clean, safe, hazard‑free jobsite and work areas.
• Maintain vehicle, tools, and equipment in organized condition.
• Train and mentor personnel on technical irrigation topics.
• Adjust all sprinkler types and nozzles, replace sprinklers, use check valves and PRS.
• Select and install appropriate conventional and HE nozzles.
• Solvent cement weld PVC according to ASME B31.1 bonding procedures.
• Repair lateral lines under all conditions; repair PVC and ductile iron mainlines up to 6 inches.
• Replace irrigation valves; rebuild valves when requested.
• Conduct annual seasonal startup inspections, drip conversions, winterizations.
• Install controllers (conventional and smart) and program conventional controllers.
• Install rain sensors, soil moisture sensors, flow meters, and master valves.
• Complete water‑saving upgrades.
• Operate walk‑behind trencher and soil compactor.
• Diagnose electrical problems using a multi‑meter, station master, and ground fault locator.
• Trace underground wires and locate faults.
• Troubleshoot and repair conventional irrigation electrical problems.
• Record materials and labor used for each job.
• Wear PPE and follow all safety rules.

• Minimum 1–5 years of landscape irrigation experience.
• Knowledge of communication cable and radio communication/hardware preferred.
• Knowledge of mechanical fittings and gate valves.
• Understanding of irrigation controller hardware; two‑wire system experience.
• Knowledge of brass valve rebuild preferred.
• Resourceful, quick learner, self‑starter, detail oriented.
• TCEQ Irrigator's Tech license.
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
• Training offered; pay negotiable.

• Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, repetitive motions.
• Medium exertion up to 100 lbs occasionally; up to 50 lbs frequently or constantly.
• Visual acuity required for equipment operation and inspection.

Primarily outdoors, exposed to varying temperatures, weather conditions, and noise levels.
