The purpose of this position is to operate an assigned school bus on an assigned transportation package/route daily, and to provide backup package/route orientation assistance for the school district. Employees are responsible for the safe transportation, loading and unloading of students, and support all bus activities that ensure the safety and welfare of all persons.
Responsibilities- Respond to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous, and empathetic manner.
- Provide backup assistance to the district’s transportation services when a package/route requires coverage.
- Provide school bus transportation for district students to and from destinations on an as‑needed basis.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑bus inspection activities to ensure proper operating conditions and compliance with Department of Transportation standards.
- Maintain attendance records, seating charts, disciplinary documentation, and updated student information; communicate via radio dispatch as appropriate.
- Maintain safe driver designation and applicable physical and dexterity standards.
- Ensure the safe loading and unloading of students, including operation of specialized equipment for students with special needs.
- Report any perceived or potential school bus defects or route discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Establish and maintain effective communications with transportation staff, district personnel, school officials, students, the public, and parents.
- Serve as a liaison between bus drivers/bus monitors and school administrators/staff.
- Assist other bus drivers/bus monitors with route changes and student referrals.
- Keep current on technology used by OCPS and attend required training to maintain skill level.
- May be required to travel to other OCPS work locations for coverage of open assignments.
- Maintain timely and accurate information as part of job responsibilities.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of six (6) months progressively responsible experience as a Bus Operator.
- Ability to comply with safe driver program standards, medical and district certification, agency‑provided County wheelchair certification, first aid and CPR training, and dexterity testing.
- Annual recertification required to maintain employment.
- Valid commercial driver’s license class “B” with passenger and school bus endorsements.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 20–50 pounds and perform tasks involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Visual and auditory perception and discrimination abilities as required by job tasks.
- Ability to handle exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as temperature, noise, humidity, and traffic hazards.
