Clinical Nurse Specialist - Dermatology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Dermatology Department. You must be able to work within a multi-disciplinary team and deliver a high quality of specialist dermatology care to a broad spectrum of patients.

The post holder will advise primary and secondary care clinicians on setting up, implementing, delivering and evaluating patient care using evidence‑based practice. They will provide services in accordance with national, regional and local guidance, standards and protocols to achieve the best outcomes for patients, abide by legal requirements, and promote and maintain standards of professional practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code.

Work autonomously, managing a caseload of patients within the specialty while working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualized and personalized direct patient care. Clinics and duties include:

  • Surgical theatre lists
  • Skin Cancer Clinics
  • Skin cancer follow‑up clinics
  • Non‑medical prescribing
  • Education for patients and junior staff
Job responsibilities

CLINICAL

  • Supervise nursing care of in‑patients admitted for assessment and treatment.
  • Provide information, advice and support to in‑patients, out‑patients and their relatives and carers.
  • Support ward staff and liaise between services.
  • Develop and manage nurse‑led services in assessment, holistic needs assessments, diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up of patients.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate pre‑admission care, interventions and discharge planning.
  • Provide support to patients undergoing treatments in conjunction with the Multi‑Disciplinary Team.
  • Lead the Cancer MDT, ensuring effective liaison and referral processes with other specialities such as oncology and palliative care.
  • Act on concerns raised by team members or service users, taking appropriate action according to Trust Policies and Guidelines.
  • Demonstrate and monitor competency in clinical skills, including clinical examination required for the post, and define protocols and guidelines for clinical examination, minor operations, and non‑medical prescribing.

LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Maintain professional competence, authority and credibility through clinical practice, acting as a role model and leader, providing supervision, support and mentorship to nursing staff.
  • Promote and disseminate best practice within the Trust and external networks.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of evidence‑based nursing practice standards, guidelines, protocols, policies and care pathways.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery strategy.
  • Lead and support the implementation of cancer outcomes and Quality Surveillance Programme requirements, leading on patient experience and service developments.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • Identify and provide support, advice and teaching to nursing and junior medical staff in the care and management of dermatology patients.
  • Contribute to in‑house clinical skills programmes.
  • Act as a mentor/supervisor for nurses undertaking higher educational awards within the speciality.
  • Contribute to the pre‑registration nurses educational experience, acting as a mentor for practice placements.

CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

  • Develop and implement clinical audit of own practice, protocols and procedures to demonstrate clinical effectiveness.
  • Act on concerns raised by team members or service users, taking appropriate action according to Trust Policies and Guidelines.
  • Record and report incidents, accidents or complaints to the Head of Nursing and act in accordance with Trust Policy.
  • Participate and lead in clinical research.
  • Introduce and apply research findings to nursing practice where relevant.
  • Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Undertake mandatory training in infection control and comply with all Trust Infection Control policies, especially hand hygiene.
  • Ensure compliance with all Trust Risk Management, Research Governance and Infection Control policies and abide by the Standards for Better Health.
