Overview
PRUH has an established endoscopy unit with multiple procedure rooms and a growing 6 room elective facility. We are recruiting an Endoscopy Junior/ Senior Nurse (Band 6) to support and develop the unit in Bromley.
Key Responsibilities- Provide nursing care for all endoscopic procedures (Enteroscopy, Video Capsule Endoscopy, EUS, TNE, Bronchoscopy, EBUS and Pre‑assessment).
- Lead and support the multidisciplinary team, acting as a team leader in the absence of the Band 7 Sister.
- Develop and maintain the pre‑assessment service, including Non‑GA pathways.
- Collaborate with Senior Sisters, Band 5 Nurses, Healthcare Assistants, colorectal and pathology teams, radiology and cancer services.
- Ensure nursing contribution meets local and national specifications and manage cross‑site responsibilities.
- Maintain high standards of patient care, including safe hand‑over, accurate documentation and adherence to NMC code.
- Mentor, train and appraise junior staff; facilitate continuous professional development.
- Assist in policy implementation, quality assurance, audits, research and service improvement initiatives.
- Create an environment that promotes excellence in nursing practice and encourages staff to reach their full potential.
- Participate in recruitment, induction and competency assessment for students and colleagues.
- Lead the endoscopy department team, ensuring staff are trained to use, maintain and troubleshoot specialised equipment.
- Delegate tasks appropriately, ensuring patient safety and efficient service delivery.
- Represent senior sister on trust working groups and Directorate committees.
- Organise duty rosters, manage emergencies and coordinate patient flow between wards and lists.
- Provide effective mentorship and support staff development through appraisals and teaching.
- Respond to complaints and incidents in line with trust policy.
- Ensure standards of cleanliness and infection control in the endoscopy unit.
- Recognise and respond promptly to urgent and emergency situations.
- Maintain accurate and legible patient records, meeting national and local trust requirements.
- Participate in audit, research and evidence‑based decision‑making to improve patient care.
- Advocate for patients, supporting them through information and complex decisions.
- Maintain professional competence and update advanced endoscopy skills.
- Assist in budgeting and efficient use of resources, including procurement of equipment and supplies.
- Monitor costs, participate in cost improvement programmes and report on financial implications of care.
- Plan and review duty rosters, ensuring optimal staffing levels.
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of nursing standards within the endoscopy department.
- Stay current with professional issues, research and emerging best practice.
- Challenge and improve practice constructively, leading change when appropriate.
- Negotiate clinical interests with senior sister and develop learning resources for the team.
- Submit innovations and new ideas aimed at improving patient care.
- Communicate daily with nursing staff, doctors, technicians, ward and administration staff face‑to‑face, by telephone and electronic means.
- Attend and report on relevant meetings, disseminating information at staff meetings.
- Act as a patient advocate, supporting families in difficult situations.
- Establish and maintain clear communication with external organisations and within the multidisciplinary team.
