Reporting to the Supervisor, Stations, the Co-op Student will support experienced Substation Technicians in the maintenance, testing, inspection, and troubleshooting of electrical substation equipment while gaining practical utility industry experience.
Duties And Responsibilities- Be familiar with all safe work practices as set out by IHSA, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, and company standards and work in conformity thereto.
- Work alongside experienced Substation Technicians to gain practical hands-on experience in the operation, inspection, maintenance and construction of electrical substation equipment.
- Gain exposure to a variety of low, medium and high voltage electrical equipment and have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a utility environment.
- Under the direct supervision and guidance of qualified personnel, the student will assist with planned maintenance activities, inspections, electrical testing, equipment troubleshooting, documentation and general substation activities.
- Assist with preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- Assist in the maintenance and testing of power transformers, circuit breakers, switch gear, disconnect switches, power fuses, lightning arresters, and battery systems.
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams and equipment drawings.
- Perform routine housekeeping to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Develop an understanding of utility work practices, safety procedures, switching and isolation practices, and work protection requirements.
- Understand and be familiar with isolation, and grounding and bonding techniques.
- Must understand and comply with Ontario Traffic Manual, Field Book 7, IHSA, OHSA, Reg. 22/04, and other policies and procedures.
- Travel to other areas within Elexicon's jurisdiction to respond to emergency trouble calls and substation alarms.
- Other duties as required may be considered part of these responsibilities.
- All employees are required to participate in safety training and to be well-versed in the company’s safety rules and practices. It is essential to implement safe work procedures that prioritize the well-being of both employees and customers.
- Demonstrated interest in electrical power systems and the electrical utility industry.
- Strong willingness to learn and accept direction from experienced personnel.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Good knowledge of safety rules and safe work practices
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Ability to work around energized electrical equipment while maintaining strict safety practices.
- Applicants must be enrolled in Electrical Engineering Technology or related college program.
- Eligible for a recognized co-op education work term.
- Applicants must possess knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
