We are recruiting an experienced and thoughtful leader into the role of Supervisor, Sterile Processing. This is a full-time day shift position supporting the daily operations of this dedicated team of SPD techs.

Candidates should possess a minimum of two years supervisor/lead experience, previous SPD (or Surgical tech) experience and certification will be required (or within 12 months).

Responsibilities
  • Daily Supervisory Operations:
    Coordinates the daily scheduling of staff and arranges for coverage; maintains daily and monthly schedules, along with PTO approval.
  • Leads departmental huddles/meetings; develops the agenda and distributes minutes to SPD staff/OR management; ensures staff adhere to Behaviors of Excellence.
  • Monitors productivity by ensuring staff accuracy and timeliness of tasks to meet department requirements.
  • Encourages staff involvement in departmental committees; facilitates process improvement initiatives with OR management, physicians, and service line leaders.
  • Performs data collection, analyzes trends, presents action plans to management, and leads/participates in projects to improve work processes.
  • Promotes patient safety by reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives; follows safety and infection control measures; acts on safety reports promptly.
  • Takes a leadership role in patient satisfaction initiatives and upholds policies and procedures of Advocate Health Care/Advocate Sherman Hospital.
Demonstrate the ability to ensure the quality and accuracy of departmental procedures
  • Provides appropriate staffing levels based on case load and department needs; follows the staffing plan.
  • Assigns staff to work areas according to skill level and department needs; provides coverage as needed.
  • Maintains workflow within the Sterile Processing Department.
  • Manages break/meal schedules and ensures timely instrument processing, turn around, and case cart assembly.
  • Facilitates positive interdepartmental communications to ensure quality patient care outcomes.
  • Monitors turnover time activities; works with SPD lead/educator to ensure inventory; maintains/upgrades equipment and case carts.
  • Works in the clinical area.
Human Resources Management
  • Supervises associates including interviewing, hiring decisions, assessing and improving clinical competency, evaluating, and counseling.
  • Responsible for discipline with approval of the SPD Manager; maintains current records for each SPD associate.
  • Ensures associates are fully competent; supports development plans and annual competency assessments; assists staff in growth toward KRAs and patient safety goals.
Operational Planning
  • Develops and implements department policies/procedures with the SPD Manager.
  • Participates in annual operational goals and budgets; collaborates on strategies to meet goals and budget targets.
  • Supports the Nursing Division’s Shared Governance philosophy and broader system goals.
Education/Experience Required

High School diploma; 3 to 4 years of Sterile Processing experience and/or Surgical Technician; 3 years of lead/coordinator experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

Excellent communication; ability to delegate; proficient computer skills including reports; able to make prompt and effective decisions; ability to instruct/teach others; capable of working in a stressful environment; ability to work with diverse staff; lead capacity; experience operating sterilizer and monitoring equipment; current Certification as a Central Service Technologist/Surgical Technician.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Frequent contact with blood and body fluids; TB testing yearly;
