Oncology Nurse Navigator
At Mahaska Health the primary role of the Oncology Nurse Navigator is to guide cancer patients from diagnosis through treatment, recovery, and survivorship. The Oncology Nurse Navigator is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role directs and guides patient teaching and provides assistance to the physician/nurse practitioner/physician’s assistant in all aspects, while maintaining standards of professional nursing in accordance with the established methods and procedures of Mahaska Health and the Medical Group.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Act as a primary contact for patients and families from the initial cancer diagnosis
- Follow patients through testing and treatment, identifying needs and resources for patients along the journey.
- Assist in the coordination of care across the continuum and provide guidance.
- Assist with education for patients and families, coordinating with other key members of the care team.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of policies and procedures related to cancer care patients.
- Serve as an advocate and counselor for oncology patients.
- Support and empower patients by reducing “barriers to care.”
- Monitor patient progress, review results with providers and take appropriate follow‑up actions with patients.
- Assist with patient referrals and insurance authorizations.
- Display empathy and exemplary customer care skills.
- Collaborate with cancer team and other departments to ensure that appropriate follow‑up appointments and testing are scheduled.
- Provide information and assistance that enhances the workflow and improves the efficiency of cancer care at Mahaska Health.
- Work effectively with patients of varied ages, racial, ethnic, and socio‑economic backgrounds.
- Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for personal practice.
- Develop and retain knowledge of departmental and hospital protocols and know how to access resources appropriately.
- Participate in meetings and committees as requested by Mahaska Health and Mission Cancer + Blood.
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa, or a graduate with an LPN license acceptable for consideration.
- Current Iowa RN/LPN license with minimum 3 years of clinical experience.
- Strong computer skills.
- ONC certification preferred.
- Experience with oncology preferred.
- Experience with chemotherapy preferred.
- Experience with cancer care patients preferred.
- Experience with Epic preferred.
