Under the guidance and supervision of the Program Director - Sports, the Martial Arts Instructor is responsible for guiding beginning and experienced participants through the YMCA Martial Arts Program. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change and to build self-esteem. The role of the Martial Arts Instructor is to assist members through this process by providing personalized attention, support and motivation.
The instructor will provide character development, health education and instruction that will lead to member retention and involvement.
- Provide members with opportunities that will increase their involvement, sense of belonging, and sense of ownership of YMCA
- Make helpful suggestions as you identify members who may be using unsafe or ineffective techniques.
- Understand and promote all YMCA programs values.
- Answer members’ questions, concerns and complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
- Provide proper health counseling that will meet the unique needs and wants of each member.
- Emphasize safety and proper technique.
- Effectively provide instruction on how to utilize all fitness equipment.
- Motivate members to commit to long-term participation.
- Regularly check all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness. Report all problems to the Program Director - Sports.
- Understand, abide by, and enforce YMCA policies and procedures. Positively explain and interpret policies to members.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures. Respond promptly and appropriately.
- Abide by the safety, injury, illness and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for your safety and the safety of your program participants.
- Instructor must possess, or receive within 90 days of hire CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Understand the components and principles of fitness and be able to discuss them in laymen terms.
- This individual must possess a professional image and ability to provide positive feedback, motivation, and encouragement.
- The instructor must be able to possess and set an excellent example of health and fitness and member service.
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must have the ability and patience to instruct members while using effective communication and human relations skills to handle situations with people of all socioeconomic levels. Must have the ability to conduct, demonstrate and safely lead members at their personal level of ability, including proper exercise technique. Must be able to lift an equivalent of 50 pounds.
