Staff Nurse – Kenyon Ward

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Kenyon Ward as a Staff Nurse caring for up to 22 patients who have undergone complex orthopaedic surgery. The role requires an individual who thrives in supporting a team caring for patients with complex orthopaedic needs and who can adapt quickly to patient deterioration.
Good knowledge of central venous devices and their management is advantageous, though training can be offered. Nurses pending registration are welcome to apply, provided they can evidence that they have satisfied the NMC Objective Structured Clinical Examination Test of Competence.
Job ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be a Registered Nurse (General) with strong communication skills, the ability to assist with change and the drive to improve and develop clinical practice. The role involves being a motivated and confident individual who shows initiative, is a team player, is flexible and reliable, and consistently maintains high standards of work.
Under the direction of the Ward/Department Manager the post holder is responsible for providing skilled, high‑quality nursing care within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring individualised and effective care is practiced and that patient‑centred care is delivered.
Contribute to the continuity of good team spirit and high standards of nursing care. Empower junior staff to develop clinical skills and facilitate communication within all care groups.
Utilise ward resources to promote excellence in practice and accelerate quality issues relevant to the service delivery.
Be accountable for maintaining own nursing practice and undertake opportunities to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence.
Assist ward staff in providing clinical and professional advice, expertise and support, and monitor performance. Keep abreast of current political issues within the NHS and future nursing trends.
Provide leadership to all staff, promote a culture of positive and effective teamwork, assess care needs, request medical input when necessary, and devise appropriate care programmes for the patient, implementing and evaluating care throughout the admission and for a safe discharge.
Continuously evaluate the quality of care given and regularly reassess patient needs to achieve planned goals. Liaise with other professionals to ensure cohesive patient care.
Formulate well‑planned discharges with appropriate follow‑up, ensuring effective liaison with families, allied health professionals and community services.
Up‑hold the Trust’s Diversity/Equal Opportunities Policy and give due regard to the safety, customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients, families, carers and staff.
Provide and receive complex or sensitive patient information, defusing difficult situations and supporting bereaved parties.
Advise on health promotion and MECC matters within own scope of practice.
Identify learning needs of patients, relatives and staff, and plan and implement education accordingly.
Maintain accurate patient records in accordance with the Data Protection Act and NMC Patient Record Keeping Guidelines.
Prepare care plans and manage time effectively to ensure patients are ready for planned procedures and staff receive appropriate breaks.
Ensure safe medication delivery via prescribed routes, following national and Trust guidelines. Assist the ward in meeting risk management standards.
Use and recharge intravenous drug administration pumps, recognising early signs of drug reaction and taking appropriate action. Annual manual handling training is mandatory.
Handle patient waste–body fluids correctly, ensuring safe disposal.
Participate in annual appraisal, set personal development objectives and complete statutory training in line with Trust policy.
Attend relevant in‑house training to enhance knowledge and skills.
Qualifications- Registered General Nurse with current NMC registration
- Post‑registration orthopaedic qualification
- Ability to lead a clinical team
- Technical skills: venepuncture, cannulation, central venous device management
- Ability to adapt to changing pressures of work
- High level of communication skills and ability to work within a team
- Basic computer skills
