CHEO is seeking a collaborative and highly skilled Manager, Payroll to lead payroll operations across CHEO, CHEO Research Institute and Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice. This is an opportunity for an experienced payroll leader to step into a complex, fast‑paced healthcare environment where precision, service, compliance, and partnership matter every day.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer, the Manager, Payroll provides strategic and operational leadership for payroll services supporting both unionized and non‑unionized employees. The successful candidate will lead a dedicated payroll team while ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, legislative compliance, collective agreement interpretation, strong internal controls, and exceptional service delivery.

You will play a key role in supporting organizational operations, maintaining financial integrity, and continuously improving payroll processes and systems in a highly collaborative environment.
As Manager, Payroll, you will lead and mentor the payroll team, fostering a culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, confidentiality, continuous improvement, and customer service excellence. You will serve as a senior escalation point for complex payroll matters and support leaders and employees through issues requiring expert interpretation and guidance.
You will oversee compliance with all payroll‑related legislation and reporting requirements, including obligations associated with the Canada Revenue Agency, Ministry of Finance, Service Canada, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. The role also leads year‑end payroll activities including T4 and related reconciliations, statutory filings, audit support, government reporting, and payroll account reconciliations.
The Manager, Payroll also plays a central role in systems configuration and process improvement initiatives. Working closely with partners across Talent Services, Labour Relations, Time Tracking, Information Services, and Finance, you will help implement enhancements within UKG and Workday while ensuring payroll practices remain aligned with collective agreements, organizational policies, and legislative requirements.
QualificationsYou are an experienced payroll professional with 5 years of experience, who combines technical expertise with a collaborative and people‑focused approach. You hold a College Diploma in Accounting, Finance or a related field, as well as an active Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation with the National Payroll Institute. You thrive in complex environments, are highly organized, and can balance multiple priorities while maintaining a high standard of accuracy and service.
You are an experienced people leader with demonstrated success leading payroll operations in a complex environment, ideally within healthcare or another large, unionized setting. You bring deep knowledge of payroll legislation, pension administration, statutory remittances, and collective agreement interpretation, along with experience managing payroll systems, audits, reconciliations, and year‑end processes.
You are known for your integrity, sound judgment, and ability to navigate sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism. You are collaborative, solutions‑focused, and comfortable working across multiple teams and priorities in a dynamic environment. Experience with UKG, Workday, and healthcare payroll practices is considered a strong asset.
