Your role

CBC’s Parliamentary Bureau is hiring an experienced audio producer to work on its award-winning weekly political show, .

has been connecting Canadians to their government for almost five decades. It's respected by politicians and loved by listeners, and as a producer on this team, you will have an opportunity to build on this legacy. To be successful you must be a first-class audio aficionado as well as a Canadian politics keener. You’ve got to know the players know how to get a hold of them.

You excel at programming insightful panels to help make politics make sense to the audience, you’ve got experience making sound-rich audio features and documentaries, and you love chasing newsmakers and breaking news. With a minority government in power and the risk of an election always possible, you’re ready to jump right in. You will be working with some of the country’s best journalists and covering some of the biggest stories to advance the program’s agenda and the shared goals of making CBC the public’s trusted source of political news and analysis.

Last but not least, you're a good colleague. You roll up your sleeves and pitch in. A sense of humour is essential.

This is a full time permanent position based in Ottawa.

Key characteristics:

  • You have strong chase producing skills. You understand politics and are able to track down the people who can tell the story best. People you pre-interview feel respected, heard, and valued.

  • You’re a strong script writer and editor. You have experience writing for the ear, and feel comfortable editing scripts for clarity and consistency.

  • Your research skills are excellent – you can track down key information quickly, fact check a script thoroughly, and can write a solid question-line.

  • You’re an accomplished audio editor, with a strong editorial ear. You know good tape when you hear it, and can edit quickly and confidently.

  • You’re proficient in Dalet or a comparable audio editing program.

  • You’re able to record in the field on Zoom or Marantz or a similar audio recorder.

  • You’re creative. Whether you’re using archival material in unique ways or choosing music or current clips to illustrate a documentary, you work with an innovative and fresh approach.

  • You are a clear and considerate communicator, and enjoy working closely with others.

  • We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • At least five (5) years’ experience of which three (3) must involve work in broadcasting, preferably radio.

  • An advanced knowledge of national politics.

  • Recognized excellence in chasing, writing scripts and audio editing. Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments.

  • Proven ability to produce interviews, including in the field, and prepare interview question lines and background material.

  • Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in storytelling.

  • High level of organization and productivity.

  • Strong & enthusiastic team player with good communication skills. Initiative taker, with the ability to be productive in individual and team settings.

  • Innovative with programming and ideas. Curious, incisive and critical thinker.

  • Strong journalistic instincts and ethics.

  • An ability to work long and unpredictable hours, including evenings and weekends.
