JOB SUMMARY

The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department is responsible for building a healthy, inclusive and vibrant City, as well as ensuring that communities, residents and visitors have access to the recreation and cultural places, programs, events and services that allow them to experience all the benefits the City has to offer, and overseeing Buildings and Facilities Management for improved service delivery integration, ensuring the best possible client experience in City facilities.

Under the guidance of a Program Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor, you are responsible for the coordination of recreation, arts, aquatics or sports programs for preschoolers, children and youth during the summer months. You provide daily supervision of staff, volunteers and Leaders in Training, and ensure participants have a safe and enjoyable camp experience. The programs may take place indoors, outdoors, in one location or a variety of locations.

Work is performed in accordance with related legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines. You are also responsible for understanding and following all City of Ottawa guidelines, policies and procedures in relation to cash handling and customer service.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Note:

minimum age of 16 years is required for this Summer Student job.

Post-Secondary Student (completion of first year college or university)

Note:

Student must be returning to school in the fall

Minimum of 8 months but less than 1 year of related experience is required including 300 hours of working as a Camp Counsellor/Leader or Senior Camp Counsellor

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certificates

AODA Accessibility/IASR Training Certification in relevant coaching/aquatics/recreation programs is an asset

KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding the developmental and recreational needs of children.
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and City policies and procedures.

  • Programming skills in crafts, sports, games, creative play, stories and music

  • Experience planning and operating recreation programs for preschoolers, children and/or youth
