Position Purpose Reporting to the Chair, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, t he incumbent plans and oversees the operations of the Mathematics and Statistics Help Centre (MSHC) in collaboration with administrative staff and supervises and supports teaching assistants. In addition, the incumbent manages outreach initiatives and external partnerships, delivers presentations and lectures to pre‑university audiences, teaches a maximum of two three‑credit courses per year, and participates in University service through committee this role, your responsibilities will include:
In collaboration with the Department’s administrative personnel, plans and organizes the operation of the MSHC. Select, train, schedule, and supervise the teaching assistants. Coordinate with the teaching staff to ensure the appropriate supporting material and exercises are given to teaching assistants working in the MSHC. Set up and manage a virtual platform for the MSHC in the summer months. Be present at the MSHC for at least 10hrs/week and respond to students’ inquiries.
Organizes and manages the outreach activities of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, such as Math Horizons Day, Math Camp, and the Math Poster Competition. This includes securing funding for outreach activities, managing correspondence with participants (schools, students, families, etc.), and managing logistics of events.
Communicates with local school boards concerning participation in outreach activities. Gives presentations to high school educators on professional activity days. Gives lectures to high school students interested in studying mathematics or statistics at the University of Ottawa. Participate in the University Open House and Math Camp.
Manages relationships with various external mathematical organizations such as the Canadian Mathematical Society, the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute, the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, and the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques to support and expand outreach activities.
Teaches a maximum of two 3-credit courses per year. Prepares, administers and marks assessments and examinations for these courses. Maintains office hours for students.
Represents the department on University of Ottawa committees, including Academic Standing, Curriculum Committee, Open House, etc.) to support program quality and outreach efforts.
