Location: Rockland
English Language Learner (ELL) Instructor
Under the supervision of the Principal and classroom teachers, the ELL Instructor provides support to students acquiring English language skills, assists teachers with classroom management, and collaborates in implementing learning assessments and individualized educational plans.

- A two‑year college diploma in child studies or a related educational field.
- Previous English Second Language instruction is preferred.
- Related employment or volunteer experience in teaching, social work or immigration services is an asset.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- TESL qualifications are an asset.
- Sensitivity to diversity and the needs of ELL students from many backgrounds.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic educational precepts, a positive attitude towards learning and belief that all learners can improve.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Well‑developed listening and communication skills.
- Respect for and maintenance of confidentiality.
- Flexibility, adaptability, patience and understanding.
- Proficiency with word processing and related computer software, including email.
- Ability to learn new software as required.
- Effective communication with students, co‑workers, Board personnel and parents under teacher direction.
- Team player capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with students one‑on‑one and in a classroom environment.
- Ability to independently carry out an educational plan as directed by teacher.
- Advocacy for cultural diversity.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding school and student issues.
- Demonstrates good attendance and works safely.
- Handles professional issues in a supportive environment.
- Broadens colleagues’ awareness of ESL issues within the school environment.
- Advocates for ELL students, attends support team meetings, assists orientation.
- Attends UCDSB professional development activities for ELL instructors.
- Maintains a safe, non‑threatening working and learning environment.
- Collaborates with the education team to identify short‑term and long‑term goals for students.
- Supervises and instructs students one‑on‑one and in classroom settings.
- Provides feedback for parent‑teacher interviews.
- Reaffirms appropriate classroom and school behaviour with students.
- Encourages positive attitudes toward education and lifelong learning.
- Maintains student portfolios and assists in keeping absent students current.
- Assists teaching staff with assessing student language acquisition and provides input for course and progress evaluation.
- Assists ELL students with assignments, reviews homework for completion and understanding.
- Instructs individuals and small groups in language acquisition, cultural appreciation and citizenship.
- Reinforces lesson plans, may communicate with parents via communication log as directed by teacher.
- Uses assessment results to assist teachers with developing differentiated, learner‑centred materials for ELLs with special needs.
