Job Description:
The Indigenous Initiatives Special Projects incumbent coordinates the implementation of the Indigenous Knowledge, Work and Entrepreneurship service program based on funded program objectives, including related activities, support services, and events, and College-wide initiatives that drive overall institutional value.
The incumbent will support the Indigenous Knowledge, Work, and Entrepreneurship (IKWE) program goals to recruit and retain Indigenous women students at Algonquin College while building leadership and professional skills, removing barriers, and providing mentorship and industry-connected entrepreneurship skills.
Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Initiatives, the incumbent works in close collaboration with the Mamidosewin Centre team members and other cross-college partners to ensure the timely fulfillment of agreement deliverables, including the coordination of the IKWE program that supports student success. This responsibility primarily focuses on coordinating events, communications, and initiatives and may include serving as a success navigator for students who benefit from the donor-funded program, ensuring students receive the appropriate College supports, and working with a network of College colleagues to provide supports to learners as they journey towards graduation and meaningful employment.
The incumbent will develop, plan, and implement events that support both retention and employment opportunities, in alignment with donor intent. Such events as culturally safe and affirming leadership development and educational and career skill building events, etc.
The incumbent is required to have direct experience with First Nation, Métis, and/or Inuit communities and students with strong understanding of first generation post-secondary learners often shaped by historical trauma and mistrust of educational institutions.
The incumbent in this position works 24 hours per week, based on an agreed upon flexible work schedule. Sometimes after hours for special events is required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Donor-Funded IKWE Program Plan and execute on-campus events for select donor funded programs, including culturally safe and affirming leadership development, career skill building events, etc.;
Deliver on three types of programs:
Internal Programs, External Events, Land-based learning;
Plan and execute programming that support culturally grounded leadership development opportunities to nurture confidence, professional and community leadership skills, and career readiness;
Establish and foster a strong network of Indigenous women leaders within the College and the broader community;
Develop and implement on campus and off-site co-curricular/ambassador/networking activities for select donor funded programs;
Participate in Student Awards selection of the IKWE Indigenous Student Support Fund, as needed;
Work with AC Recruitment to promote IKWE to local and regional school boards, as applicable;
Collaborate and support cross-purpose programming through IKWE and Nìgàn to maximize student exposure to prospective employers and external organizations and opportunities.
