National Lifeguard Certified (Lifesaving Society) Educational Assistant

100% Consistent Casual, 35 hours/week, 7:50am - 3:30pm

Under the direction of the Principal, the Educational Assistant is an integral member of the school team and is responsible for the provision of support to students with exceptional needs within the school. The position involves dealing with confidential information and requires ongoing flexibility and variability. Responsibilities are varied, in collaboration with teaching and other professional staff, and include: supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and students with developmental disabilities;participation

in pool programs, academic support, implementing special programs, support to deaf/hard of hearing or visually impaired students, physiotherapy exercises and stretches.

Educational Assistants may be required to modify programs and support learning for students with learning disabilities, and speech/language issues. Assignments may also include outside yard duties, lifting, toileting, and/or pool duties. Knowledge of Ontario Curriculum and educational communication software such as Dragon and Kurzweil are assets.

The successful candidate will possess a community college diploma in Developmental Services Worker, Child and Youth Care/Worker, or equivalent, and a minimum of 1-2 years of related experience with school aged special needs children. Equivalent programs must be assessed by Employee Services staff. Valid First Aid certification/CPR Level C is an asset. The successful candidate will have also completed Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, TCI, and/or Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) training.

• Successful candidate must be National Lifeguard Certified (Lifesaving Society):
  Developmental Disabilities Program (DDP), Experience working or living with people with developmental disabilities. Swimming and toileting students up to age 21 is mandatory. Understanding and experience working with AAC is highly desirable.

In accordance with the Student Support Personnel's Collective Agreement, O.S.S.T.F. District 25, and further to Articles 23.04 and 23:07 qualified regular part-time employees are eligible to increase their status and apply to part-time term vacancies if it does not interfere with their regular assignment, subject to Article 13:03; (i.e. 30 minutes between assignments or travel time, whichever is greater, without impact on current part-time hours of work).
