Decontamination Helper
The Decontamination Helper performs general custodial and janitorial work in active areas and may be required to perform general decontamination work, handle radioactive waste, and maintain general supplies.
Key Responsibilities- Work independently to perform general custodial and janitorial duties in active areas, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, waxing, and stripping as necessary.
- Perform general decontamination work, including decontamination of equipment, facilities, surfaces, tools, and packaging, as directed.
- Remove radioactive waste from various facilities, package it for disposal, and assist Environmental Health and Safety, Quality Control and Production groups in radiation decontamination duties, contamination control, and waste disposal trailer loading.
- Maintain janitorial supplies and supply cupboards, do laundry within the active area, and handle warehouse pickup of supplies.
- Handle, package, assemble, and move product components and customer orders as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Must have Grade XII education or equivalent experience.
- Familiar with operating radiation detecting devices and able to read, recharge, and record readings of direct-reading dosimeters.
- Capable of maintaining simple records and becoming familiar with all safety procedures.
- Able to lift heavy objects and operate heavy moving equipment.
- Have the temperament necessary for active area work and understand the consequences of working with potentially radioactive or contaminated material.
- Good oral communication skills and ability to record and document work performed.
- Capable of operating all relevant computer systems.
- Under direction of the Senior Radiation and Contamination Monitor and/or Radiation and Contamination Monitor, make routine measurements and reports within the Department.
- Report any detection of a radiation hazard to supervision, the Radiation and Contamination Monitor, or a Radiation Surveyor.
- May be involved in emergency situations involving radiation and/or contamination.
- Required to wear respirator and other safety equipment when necessary.
- Expected to work overtime, shift work, and call‑ins as required, and may be called in at all off‑hours to respond to unusual incidents.
- Keep responsibility areas neat and clean.
- Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker.
