Are you looking to play a key role in supporting Canada's radioactive waste management operations while contributing to environmental stewardship and nuclear safety? If you are, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is seeking a Waste Management Technical Officer to join our Waste Management Operations team. In this role, you will support the safe acceptance, tracking, storage, retrieval, and disposition of radioactive waste while coordinating operational activities, surveillance programs, and remediation initiatives within the Waste Management Areas.

What you will be doing!

  • Coordinating the acceptance, qualification, scheduling, routing, and emplacement of on-site and off-site waste shipments.
  • Managing administrative controls, waste records, and tracking systems to support waste management operations.
  • Supervising waste emplacement activities and ensuring compliance with approved operational procedures.
  • Ensuring compliance with Nuclear Criticality Safety requirements and established waste handling, transport, storage, and emplacement controls.
  • Executing Intermediate and High-Level Waste (ILW/HLW) emplacement, retrieval, and repackaging activities.
  • Assisting in the development of specialized tools and methods used to retrieve waste storage containers.
  • Conducting routine facility safety inspections, surveillance activities, and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Executing contaminated water removal activities and supporting operational response requirements.
  • Documenting surveillance results and preparing technical reports and operational records.
  • Preparing work permits, lockout/tagout procedures, work plans, statements of work, and operational procedures.
  • Developing and coordinating weekly work schedules to support operational priorities and project requirements.
  • Overseeing multidisciplinary crews involved in waste emplacement, retrieval, transfer, and remediation activities.
  • Responding to abnormal operating conditions and making safety-focused operational decisions to protect workers, the public, and the environment.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
    • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position, combined with typically three to eight years of related experience;
      OR
    • Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) combined with significant relevant and progressive experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience
    • Experience supporting waste management, operations, industrial, environmental, nuclear, or related technical programs.
    • Experience preparing technical documentation, work packages, operational procedures, or reports.
    • Experience coordinating work activities and schedules in a safety-focused operating environment.
    • Experience working with internal and external stakeholders to support operational objectives.
    • Valid Ontario driver's licence.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while providing direction to personnel from multiple disciplines.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prepare, manage, and execute work schedules and operational plans.
    • Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
    • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills, particularly in operational and safety-related situations.
    • Ability to evaluate technical information and apply sound judgement when responding to changing operational conditions.
