General Accountabilities:

  • Work and collaborate with a strong technical team, to address numerous upcoming and on-going challenges as it relates to the Distribution Grid
  • Assist in the research and development of new technologies from concept to implementation.
  • Assist in providing assessment, analysis and recommendations associated with distribution and transmission lines operation and work activities
  • Provide engineering design and technical support to Distribution Lines of Business (Dx LoBs), on such matters relating to materials acquisition and management, new technologies, design, planning, project engineering, standards, reliability improvements, root cause investigation, etc. to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of Hydro One’s distribution assets.
  • Provide technical advice, clarification, interpretation, problem-solving solutions, instructions, direction and similar related support services to all Dx LOBs staff on designs, unforeseen issues, processes, technical specifications and requirements around operations, maintenance and limitations of the distribution system.
  • Contribute to the development of computer programs or provide appropriate technical specifications/requirements to the appropriate programmers, to study and solve problems on the distribution system. Determine future needs for computer systems, programs, and software applications.
  • Develop, review, and approve standards and designs to meet requirements and ensure all applicable codes and government regulations are followed including compliance to national standards, safety policies and regulations, reliability and operational standards and other applicable requirements.
  • Maintain an awareness of technological advances in work tools, equipment, processes, databases and work practices to support Hydro One’s distribution system.
  • Interact with external standard committees or research and development organizations, to integrate best practices and incorporate suitable requirements in design standards and material specifications to improve the efficiency and reliability of Hydro One’s distribution system.
  • Assist in the establishment, interpretation and promote the understanding of policies, standards, and processes.
  • Provide support to Dx LOBs to ensure Hydro One’s compliances to the Distribution System Code, Ontario Regulation 22/04, Hydro One’s Conditions of Service, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Work to position the company to be prepared for the grid of the future through involvement in the various portfolios described in this document, as well as any and all new opportunities or different business focus such as, but not limited to, broadband / joint use, electric vehicles, electrification, and other initiatives.
  • Provide an engineering support function in developing and approving “one-of” distribution designs to support Hydro One’s distribution programs.
  • Provide an engineering support function to assist field staff in applying the overhead and underground distribution standards in the design and construction of the distribution system.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to field staff, planning staff, and other departments as required relating to Ontario Regulation 22/04.
  • Communicate and present updates to field staff about distribution standards and technical policy.
