About the Position
Engineering Test Pilot – Fixed Wing or Rotary Wing in the Civil Aviation Branch at Transport Canada.
Responsibilities- Determine the flight test program necessary for aircraft certification approval.
- Act as test pilot flight crew member to conduct flight tests necessary for certification and audit manufacturers' production standards.
- Develop new regulations and advisory material, including acceptable flight test techniques for certification.
- Review qualifications and make specialist recommendations for authorisation for ministerial delegation to individuals and organisations.
- Maintain a high level of conventional and flight test specific piloting skills and participate in professional development.
- Willing and able to travel nationally and internationally as required.
- Willing and able to work overtime and weekends as required.
- Stream 1: personally test flying all types of civil airplanes, often in critical flight envelope areas.
- Stream 2: personally test flying all types of civil helicopters, often in critical flight envelope areas.
Education and Experience
Education: Graduation with a degree from a recognised post‑secondary institution in engineering, mathematics, science, or a relevant field; and successful completion of a one‑year Engineering Test Pilot course or a minimum of five years experience as an experimental/developmental test pilot with a manufacturer of civil certified transport category aircraft.
Occupational Certification:
- Stream 1:
Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), airplane with Group
I Instrument Rating, and valid Restricted Radio‑Telephone Operator Certificate (endorsed Aeronautical). - Stream 2:
Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) – Helicopter Category with Group
IV Instrument Rating, and valid Restricted Radio‑Telephone Operator Certificate (endorsed Aeronautical).
Experience:
- Stream1:
Significant engineering flight test experience as Pilot in Command of five or more airplane types and as Engineering Test Pilot in several airplane or system development and/or certification projects. - Stream2:
Significant engineering flight test experience as Pilot in Command of five or more helicopter types and as Engineering Test Pilot in several helicopter or system development and/or certification projects.
- Civil airworthiness certification design standards.
- Aircraft operations; flight test techniques; aerodynamics, stability and control, performance, power plants and aircraft system operation.
- Helicopter operations; flight test techniques; aerodynamics, stability and control, performance, power plants and helicopter system operation.
