Our Chalk River location is looking for a Fire Protection Section Head to play a critical role in delivering a safe, compliant, and efficient Fire Technical Services program in support of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories projects and commercial initiatives.

What will you be doing!
  • Supervising a team of 6-8 Fire Protection Engineers/Specialists.
  • Assisting in goal setting, performance evaluations, career development, disciplinary and promotion actions, and recruiting technical resources (internally and externally).
  • Providing motivation and technical guidance to the team, and ensuring the technical validity of their work.
  • Ensuring that qualified staff are assigned and trained to perform work.
  • Prescribing applicable design processes quality elements, and the execution of engineering activities in support of work at CNL executed by the Fire Protection Program.
  • Executing engineering activities in accordance with prescribed standards, processes and verification planning documents.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.
Education
  • At minimum, a Bachelors (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization. Significant related experience in a field of specialization.
Experience
  • 8-10 years of experience in Fire Protection Engineering or specialization.
  • Experience reviewing designs relating to Fire Protection to ensure fire protection safety and compliance to applicable codes & standards.
  • Experience evaluating the adequacy of fire protection system design in accordance with applicable fire protection criteria and recommending changes as applicable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to solve technical problems and communicate their solutions in an orderly, practical manner.
  • Good oral communication and writing skills, including the ability to provide presentations to groups.
  • Strong understanding of the National Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, National Fire Code and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Canadian Underwriters Laboratories (CAN/ULC), and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) N293 and N393 standards.
  • Understanding of Canadian nuclear regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in the provision, operation, and maintenance of fire protection, suppression, and alarm systems, as well as other interrelated building systems, as required.
Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions
  • Working schedule:
    Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty‑seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
  • This position is part of the CRPEG Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the CRPEG Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
  • Occasional travel to other CNL sites and meetings as required.
  • Overtime or flexible work schedules will occasionally be required.
