In this pivotal role, you will be at the forefront of shaping the technical architecture and driving business development for the Telesat Lightspeed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network. As the principal technical authority for defence clientele, your expertise will be essential in converting intricate operational needs into secure and efficient communication solutions tailored for global military and government partners.

What you'll do
  • Oversee the entire technical lifecycle for key defence initiatives, starting from initial client engagement to proposal crafting and ongoing support after deployment.
  • Draft comprehensive technical responses for Requests for Information (RFIs) and Requests for Proposals (RFPs), which include detailed solution narratives, compliance matrices, and design documentation.
  • Develop Concept of Operations (CONOPS), white papers, and capability briefs aimed at influencing pre-procurement decisions and national defense programs.
  • Design network architectures that adhere to stringent security and operational standards across various domains, including land, sea, air, and space.
  • Conduct thorough analyses of defence procurement trends, identify capability gaps, and evaluate competitor systems to effectively position the Lightspeed network.
  • Collaborate closely with internal Product and Engineering teams to ensure that the network roadmap aligns with the evolving requirements of customers.
  • Represent the technical aspects of the organization during briefings, demonstrations, and industry events, showcasing Telesat's capabilities.
  • Engage with stakeholders to gather feedback and refine solutions based on client needs and operational realities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and technological advancements to inform strategic decisions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards in the development and deployment of solutions.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Networking, or Computer Science is required.
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in systems engineering, solution engineering, or connectivity design specifically within government and defence sectors.
  • Strong technical knowledge in satellite communications and radio frequency (RF) systems.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, particularly OSI Layers 1-3, as well as 3G, 4G, and 5G systems, including MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet.
  • Proven experience in designing and managing systems that operate under high security classifications and adhere to government cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Professional proficiency in English is essential.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and capable of obtaining clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Willingness to work onsite at the Ottawa headquarters for a minimum of four days per week.
Nice to have
  • Proficiency in a second language, particularly French, Spanish, Italian, German, or Korean, is advantageous.
  • Experience with satellite network operations or related defence applications.
  • Familiarity with agile project management methodologies.
Skills & tools
  • Expertise in satellite and RF communications technologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSI Layers 1-3 networking principles.
  • Understanding of mobile standards including 3G, 4G, and 5G.
  • Familiarity with MEF 3.0 Carrier Ethernet specifications.
  • Knowledge of defence cybersecurity frameworks and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in proposal writing and the development of RFIs and RFPs.
