Mechanical Designer

Job Description This Mechanical Designer role focuses on designing and sustaining a portfolio of communication devices, including desktop, hand-held, and DECT phones. You will work extensively with plastics, electronic enclosures, and assemblies to ensure products remain modern, reliable, and manufacturable. The position combines hands-on troubleshooting, detailed mechanical design, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support new product development and continuous improvement throughout the product lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Design and sustain mechanical components and assemblies for desktop, hand-held, and DECT communication devices.
  • Create and update 3D models and 2D drawings for solid and plastic components using Pro/ENGINEER Creo or Solid Works.
  • Develop mechanical layouts for PCBs, including outlines, common features, and integration within electronic enclosures.
  • Design and optimize plastic injection molded parts and other components for manufacturability, cost, and assembly.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Cost (DFC) principles to new and existing products.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure robust fit, form, and function.
  • Support new product development from concept through mass production, including prototyping, validation, and design refinement.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues on devices and work hands-on with prototypes and production units to resolve problems.
  • Fabricate and evaluate prototypes, including 3D-printed parts, and participate in debugging and design iteration.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers for prototyping and tooling, and provide clear specifications and feedback.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers, to align design with process capabilities.
  • Use product lifecycle management tools, such as Agile PLM or similar systems, to manage design data, changes, and documentation.
  • Contribute to structural and mechanical simulations as needed to support design decisions and product robustness.
  • Maintain and update design documentation, including drawings, models, and specifications, in accordance with internal standards.
Essential Skills
  • At least 5 years of hands-on mechanical design experience, with a strong preference for plastic injection molding.
  • Proficiency in Pro/ENGINEER Creo with a minimum of 3 years of experience in solid modeling, assemblies, and 2D drawings.
  • Experience using either CREO or Solid Works for mechanical design of electronic devices and assemblies.
  • Mechanical PCB layout design experience, including defining PCB outlines and common mechanical features.
  • Strong understanding of plastic injection molding processes and design considerations for molded parts.
  • Solid understanding of Design for Excellence (DFX), including Design for Manufacturing, Design for Assembly, and Design for Cost.
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes such as injection molding, sheet metal, compression molding, and CNC machining.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the product development process from concept through mass production.
  • Solid understanding of tolerances, including application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience performing tolerance analysis for mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Hands-on prototype fabrication experience, including 3D printing and debugging of mechanical designs.
  • Experience working with external suppliers for prototyping and tooling activities.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams in an engineering or product development…
