Job Title: Senior Tax Accountant

Location: Oakville, Ontario (Remote/Hybrid Work Model)
Salary Range: $80,000 - $110,000 CAD (commensurate with experience)
Travel: Travel allowance provided for required office attendance or business needs.

About the Role:

We are seeking a seasoned and strategic Senior Tax Accountant to become an integral leader within our finance team. This pivotal role extends beyond compliance to encompass the proactive management and optimization of our corporate tax landscape. You will be the internal expert responsible for ensuring absolute adherence to Canadian tax legislation while identifying and implementing strategies that support the company's financial health and long-term objectives.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional with a profound grasp of corporate tax intricacies, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for mentorship.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance Reporting:

  • Prepare, review, and file accurate and timely federal and provincial corporate income tax returns (T2), along with related schedules and financial statement disclosures.

  • Oversee the preparation and submission of monthly, quarterly, and annual HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) returns, ensuring meticulous reconciliation and compliance.

  • Manage all aspects of payroll tax compliance, including remittances, reporting, and year-end filings (T4s, T4

    As).

  • Ensure the precise preparation of tax-related note disclosures in the company’s financial statements.

Tax Strategy Planning:

  • Develop, model, and implement proactive tax planning strategies to minimize the company’s effective tax rate and optimize cash flow.

  • Conduct thorough analysis of corporate transactions, acquisitions, and reorganizations for tax implications and opportunities.

  • Provide strategic advice on capital management, including the efficient use of the Capital Dividend Account (CDA) and the General Rate Income Pool (GRIP).

  • Manage the company’s refundable dividend tax on hand (RDTOH) accounts, including Enhanced Refundable Dividend Tax On Hand (ERDTOH) and Non-Eligible Refundable Dividend Tax On Hand (NERDTOH), to inform dividend policy.

Audit Management Risk Mitigation:

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) inquiries, audits, and reviews.

  • Lead the preparation and compilation of all required documentation, responses, and supporting analyses for CRA engagements.

  • Develop and maintain robust internal controls and procedures to ensure tax accuracy and mitigate audit risk.

Financial Analysis Advisory:

  • Perform detailed reviews of financial statements and operational results to identify tax implications and provide actionable recommendations to senior management.

  • Conduct in-depth research on complex and emerging tax issues, delivering clear, well-reasoned memorandums and strategic guidance.

  • Assist in the financial planning process by providing critical input on the tax aspects of budgets, forecasts, and long-range projections.

Leadership

Collaboration:

  • Serve as a key liaison with external tax advisors, auditors, and legal counsel on specialized matters.

  • Mentor, coach, and train junior tax and accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence within the team.

  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional departments, including Finance, Legal, and Operations, to provide integrated tax guidance.

Key Skills and

Qualifications:

Education Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required.

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is mandatory.

  • Completion of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program or a Master’s degree in Taxation is a significant asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience specializing in Canadian corporate taxation.

  • Proven track record gained within a public accounting firm and/or a complex corporate tax department.

  • Extensive, hands-on experience with Canadian corporate tax compliance, HST, payroll taxes, and CRA audit defense.

Technical Expertise:

  • Expert-level knowledge of the & Income Tax Act & and related regulations.
