JOB SUMMARY

By-law and Regulatory Services enforces a multitude of municipal by-laws and provincial legislation on a city-wide basis to address issues of safety, nuisance and consumer protection for residents. The Parking Enforcement Program addresses the parking by-law service demands of the city (On-Street, Off-Street, Private Parking).

Under the direction of the assigned Supervisor, By-law Enforcement, you patrol City parks to ensure compliance to the Parks and Animal Care and Control By-laws, follow up with residents on the non-renewal of dog/cat registrations (tags), enforce various Signs By-laws by proactively removing unpermitted signage throughout the City, and assist with Parking enforcement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Post-secondary Student - completion of first year college or university in Police Foundations, Law or Criminology Course of study related to law or law enforcement

Minimum of 1 year but less than 2 years of related experience dealing with the public in a client service environment, report writing

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • Some knowledge of municipal government
  • Customer service techniques and alternative dispute resolution techniques.
  • Computer applications (Microsoft Office)
  • General knowledge of municipal government and the role of By-law Enforcement.
  • The geography of the City and roadways.

  • Work effectively under stressful conditions and deal with the public in difficult situations in a calm, effective manner.
  • Explain and educate the public and clients on by-laws in a positive manner.

  • Meet the physical demands of patrol and shift work regardless of weather conditions.
  • WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Various language requirements:
    English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
  • Police Record Check:
    The successful candidate will be required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check (Level
    2) with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.;
    Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
