Director, National Affairs

We are looking for a Director, National Affairs. You will play a key role in shaping public policy and influencing decisions at the federal level. This full‑time position is based in Ottawa and allows a hybrid work arrangement.

What will you do?

As the Director, National Affairs you will advance CFIB’s federal advocacy and policy priorities. Reporting to the Vice‑President, National Affairs, you will translate CFIB’s positions into effective lobbying strategies, develop policy, and engage stakeholders to represent small businesses across Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze federal legislation, regulations and public policy developments impacting small businesses
  • Draft submissions, briefing notes, reports and correspondence for government officials and stakeholders
  • Contribute to the development and advancement of CFIB’s legislative and policy positions
  • Monitor the political and economic landscape to identify risks and opportunities for advocacy
  • Support lobbying strategies and help execute advocacy initiatives at the federal level
  • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials, political staff, public servants and external partners
  • Collaborate with provincial teams and internal departments to ensure alignment on policy priorities
  • Support internal stakeholders on policy‑related matters and provide guidance where needed
  • Act as a spokesperson at times, including media interviews and public presentations
  • Prepare clear, persuasive communications tailored to different audiences
  • Contribute to cross‑functional initiatives and ensure consistent messaging across policy files
  • Support team development and may supervise staff (currently one direct report, subject to change)
Qualifications
  • A university degree in Economics, Public Policy, Political Science or equivalent experience
  • Experience in government, public policy, legislative affairs or government relations
  • Strong understanding of federal political, economic and legislative environments
  • Proven ability to analyze complex information and develop clear, structured policy positions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French
  • Strong relationship‑building skills and ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Experience writing policy documents, submissions and briefing materials
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data analysis tools
  • Eligible to lobby under the federal Lobbying Act, as required
